Minecraft World Corruption

Alright, long story short: My world file apperently got corrupted yesterday (atleast that's what support suggested). So instead of using a backup I have decided to reset the entire world and start over again. Obviously some players are not happy about this, but luckily most of my players are staying.

- Now I would just like to know what causes these corruptions and how to prevent them?

- Can anyone name a few things that I could do to prevent this in the future?

- Does the size of my world have anything to do with it?

- Are there programs to fix corrupted save files?

Thanks for reading, I would really love to learn more about this, as I think it's the worst that can happen to your server...

Bad mods. No prevention but not using them.

Backup often.

No.

Not unless it's only one specific part of it.

Any names of programs that could fix "specific parts" of a corrupted save file?

Also Backing up often is just standard, it doesn't prevent anything from happening tho.
