Post Street Fighter IV elevated to prize tournament

We are pleased to announce that the Street Fighter IV (XBox 360) tournament has been elevated from a fun tournament to a prize winning tournament! This will make i37 the first major tournament for SF IV in 2009.

The tournament will take place on Saturday 8th August in the M Festival hall. Both participants of i37 and visitors to M Festival will be able to take part in the tournament, which is being held in the "Turn Up and Play" area of the hall. All you need to do to take part is register and bring yourself along on the day - no need to bring your console, we have plenty! Alongside this tournament will be the World Cyber Games Virtua Fighter 5 tournament and competitors will be able to enter both. Entering any of the WCG tournaments means a chance to win a trip to China and represent the UK in the WCG Grand Final later this year.

An initial £200 will be awarded to the winner of Street Fighter IV, with £100 going to the runner up and a further £50 given to the 3rd placed competitor. These prize funds are guaranteed to be at least this much but we will substantially increase this figure if signups prove popular. To give you an idea, the total prize fund would increase to £500 should we get 64 competitors and again to £1,000 if we hit 128+ registrations. So make sure you get all your friends involved!

To register for this tournament you will need an M Festival day pass which you can book via our M Festival website. Many of our other tournaments require a full "Weekend Festival" ticket but to show our support for the thriving SF IV community we have dropped the requirement to just a single day ticket as a minimum.

Registrations will open tomorrow (Friday 3rd July 2009) via our i-Series website. Hadouken!

From a technical perspective it's much easier to run this as an xbox 360tournament, rather than tie up pcs for it.

I felt it necessary to bring in my perspective on this issue as a fighting-games tournament organiser.

The reason VS games are prefered to be run on Arcades is because it's the most accurate version of the game and the controls are standardised. Console versions however use their own peripherals and the community is divided between 360 and PS3.

The arcade machines are actually PC based therefore making the PC the most arcade perfect version available. This also means players with either 360 or PS3 sticks will be able to use their own prefered pads/sticks. This will be the most obvious choice if you want to get the two communities together and get the sign-ups you need.

While I understand it may be easier to run it on the 360 set-ups you already have, not much effort is required to get this running on PC instead. I'll even provide my own copy of SFIV if you require.

I'd like to know if you have further questions on this matter and if you may be looking to changing the platform.

Thank you :]

This is awesome, I only recently got into Street Fighter IV on my xbox but I'm loving it. Shall train up the button bashing skills.

I presume it'll be moved from fun -> prize tournaments in due time?

The issue is more that its a TUP tournament and we don't have any spare PC's to use, we do however have spare Consoles which makes the decision for us...

The vote for what platform to use at SVB over on neoempire is around 70% to 30% in favour of the 360.

i might be able to donate 2 pcs for this and 2 montiors as well.

if multiplay cant do it for this event please look in to for the next

I'm glad to see that this is happening, a bit disheartened to find out that everything that's up top was my idea right down to the prize scaling on numbers, sent in an email to multiply to help them raise the profile of this game amongst the attendee's and MPUK community.

I would have appreciated at least some acknoledgement for that.

As I said in that email, I Also think you should have someone with some fighting game experience running the tournament, i36 event was far from smooth, Cee has a lot of experience running fighter tournaments, if he's attending it might be an idea to get him on board to see how you can improve upon last years (it wouldn't be hard to improve upon that though, just keeping the admin at the tournament Tv's would be a start.)

Every I-series event I've been at I've been turning up and setting up mini street fighter tournaments, I'm glad to see that how ever this happens it's finally getting some attention.

Hi affro, I haven't seen anything official from you regarding this so I apologise for not mentioning you - please be aware how many suggestions and Ideas I receive on a daily basis and how hard it is to remember everyone. It has actually been something thats been in mind for quite some time now. You haven't been the only one to suggest this in the past, others have included people such as ODEE, myself, and various other admins.

As I'm sure you are aware I'm working through a 2 year year plan to overhaul how we manage and run tournaments, in order to help take the events to the next level. I have a list of things already I want to change or improve however it has to be gradual evolution rather than flick a switch and change everything!

Please do keep the ideas and suggestions coming, we do read them all (even the massive amounts of silly ones!) Even if it seems nothing is happening the chances are it's being worked on as to how we can achieve it. If people do not get direct credit for this I can only apologise, quite often the same suggestion will come in multiple times.

From a Street Fighter IV perspective, I am hoping that community pulls together and supports us in the same way the Halo 3 one has, because then I can justify it as a regular fixture to the events!

I forgot to mention that duxor and another admin will be running SF4 this time around. and it will have a bit more in the way of resources to ensure it runs smoothly.

I was asked to send the email in IRC by Bob.

I can paste the email in here if you want with the time stamp on when it was sent but I'm sure you'd rather I didn't do that as the numbers are identical to the email I sent in.

Either way, if you want to make it more popular then you WILL have to involve Neo Empire as they are the originators of fighter tournaments in the UK.

I've already been keeping tabs on Neo Empire, spoken to various people at Capcom etc. If you have any contancts at Neo Empire then get them to get in touch if they want to be involved.

With regards giving the credit, if it is as close as you say (and I don't dispute this) then by all means take it, I based all my calcualtions from an event that happened in London recently so its likely if you have done the same they will be similar. Bear in mind my job is to take what the community want from ideas and suggestions and make it happen however I can. If we were to add credits to the news posts there would be quite a lot of names in there and the posts would look silly.

We are about to start something major and to pull it off we will need the help, backing, and support of all communities that want to take advantage of what Multiplay can offer (more details on this soon.) Myself, Wizzo and everyone else at Multiplay will need the full support of you all if we really are to make a difference within both eSports and casual gaming.

As it states in the SF4 Rules the following:

".......Controller: Default xbox controller, players may use a fight stick if they bring one, controllers with turbo are banned. Players will be given time to customise their control scheme before a match......"

Does this mean we wouldn't be able to use the following controller?
Mad Catz Xbox 360 Street Fighter IV FightPad (google it)

As it was released specifically for SF4.....

Does that also include the UK official which gave free entry to the European championships, the UK winner went on to win a Scooter and some cash.

Well, I spoke to Capcom briefly when originally setting up and they informed me there hadn't been a cash tournament before. Knowing how involved they are with their community I didn't have any reason to doubt this :x

The SF4 tournament is going to be run at the same time as the final group matches and the rest of the double elim games of CSS. Generally if you enter CSS you're unlikely to be able to enter other tournaments.

We have 6 for source though, so I will be free for it.

plus, only 3/128 seem to have signed up anyway, so surely you want all the participants you can get?

If your team have 6 then you will need to see the Tournament helpdesk at the event and we will manually add you in on the day.
