Carrying all of your gear!

Right, ive decided to drive myself to the event and i will actually be now arriving at about 10am a good 8 hours before start time (im counting that i dont get lost).

However, i have a slight problem with my travel plans. No, its not that i havnt driven on the motoways in about 4 years because im setting off in the early hours to avoid traffic. But somthing alittle more practical, i drive a smart roadster coupe:

Image not of my car, mines a lovly blue and silver with nice alloys and an 2007 plate. Was the last one in the country with larger back sports tirers and sports kit on it.

Beautiful car. Automatic for those long journeys, relining roof for them hot days, 0.7lt engine which means a full tank is only £25 and can go hundreds of miles with a 0-60 in just under 10 seconds. But lets look at the practicality of this situation:

Back Boot Space

Image not of my car, mines a lovly blue and silver with nice alloys and an 2007 plate. Was the last one in the country with larger back sports tirers and sports kit on it.

Front Boot Space

Image not of my car, mines a lovly blue and silver with nice alloys and an 2007 plate. Was the last one in the country with larger back sports tirers and sports kit on it.

Great, i can fit my PC/Monitor on the back boot space. My bag and all of the other gear in the front boot space. But what about my popup tent? Well, ive just tried to fit it into the car and it wont fit. If wont go on the passenger seat, and it will JUST fit in the back but it will block my inside mirror which i dont really want to do.

Why buy a popup tent? Well, never tented before and im lazy... damn lol.
------------------------------------

This leaves me with three options:
1) Somehow post my tent to the event and pick it up when i get there (is it possible/allowed?)
2) Rent a car capable of bringing all of my gear.
3) Get a lift, although i can easily get a lift there and back to the event. I have no idea how i can carry my base, monitor, backpack, tent, sleeping bag, roll mat, lockign equipment (for PC), cd pack + many many more when being dropped off at the door of the event. Although if i can get it to the tent area id be happier as i can signifantly reduce by carring load... Ill probably go for option 3.

Hire a real car. Small engine + motorway = fail.

You can also play all the usual hire car games,

'Beat the rev limiter'. We've had a diesel van revving at over 6k. The trick it to beat the synchromesh.

'Rally driver's gear change'. Learn to change gear without using the clutch. It's a useful lesson.

In a car with non-movable seats and non reclyning with a ultra thin roof. A tent is more prefrable and ive bought it now anyway lol.

I bought it because it was double skinned (as recomended) and because of this video for the novice lol:

http://www.pop-up-tents.co.uk/video.html

Although in the video it looks smaller than it actually is to carry.

The car has a 0.7 engine but is actually less than half of the weight of a corsa giving fantastic power to weight ratio and a top speed of 120mph which it can easily do. 0-60 in 10seconds which is better than my old corsa which took 18 seconds.

Exactly.

Small engine = high revs = very tiring on a motorway.
Isn't it a 3 cylinder lump as well?

I'm sure you will find a way. I have a pug 106 and have managed to get 3 adults, with full pc's, monitors etc and sleeping stuff to Stoke and back. It was a bit of a squeeze but we did it. Small car great fuel economy 1.4 = 70mpg diesel FTW

I was very tempted by the roadster brabus, that is until I got into one. I discovered that they are very difficult to get in and out of.

I forgot about the windscreen...

We were given a hire van, with a cracked windscreen. We didn't think it was that legal, they said it was, so...

It was in the middle of winter and by alternating full heat and cold outside air blowing onto the screen, we got the crack from about 4 inches, to about 2 feet.

I'm confused, if the tent pop's up, can you not pop it back down again to fit it in your car?... Failing that.. buy a roof rack!

No I think the idea was to put the car and lan gear in the popup tent and catch the train/bus .

Im sorry but your smart car has been beaten by a 700cc golf kart.

Craig I seem to recall said something about MPUK potentially selling cheap, do-you-for-the-course-of-the-event-and-then-bin-it type tents at the event itself. Low price. No boot space needed. Job done. May be worth enquiring about.

Ps. We also had a pop up tent last event. Great time-saver but a bugger to fit in a small car, I agree!

You should be able to fit the tent in the front seat just make sure its placed in its bag correctly to save space, although with all that extra weight in the car and less than a liter engine stay out of the right lane lol

It's a popup tent. When they are 'packed away' it's like having a plastic hula hoop wrapped in tent material. He's saying that because the car is small, it takes up the whole of the back seat, blocking his view. It cannot be laid flat in his car, or squashed.

OP just buy a cheapo £10-20 dome tent from tesco or argos?

If this happens, I do believe there was a charity at Glastonbury last year collecting unwanted or forgotten tents for usage elsewhere - I'd recommend finding a way such as this to recycle them. It's a bit of a waste of tent otherwise.
