The Mac Pro is a 64 bit Apple computer. I think it's short sighted ignorance on apple's part really

I don't see why the iPhone needs to be 64 bit. Its a small portable device with limited memory and processing capability.

Makes sense to me.

This.

Apple products are a lifestyle statement, they are there to look pretty and make you appear cool to your peers. If they actually do anything it's just an added bonus.

We're talking about 64-bit windows o/s's here. As in, you can't plug this one into your pc and exchange information or pictures or videos etc without having to downgrade to a 32-bit o/s

i have to wonder where the future lies for 64bit cpus for regular users, those who can't work out which obscure hacks to use or patch KB999999 to download. i guess 32bit operating systems will still have legs for a while yet for the masses. in a similar vein, i wonder what's going to happen when games start needing beyond 2GB of memory to run decently, from what i've heard 3GB and beyond can cause upsets depending on the program and OS

I'm really NOT surprised at this. No matter how much Microsoft push their .NET framework 2/3 allowing programmers to write software and have it run in native 32 and 64 bit modes, developers won't take to it.

It's really not hard to take source code and slap it into an x64 compiler. 32-bit Windows can't really see beyond 3.5 GB most of the time. 64-bit Windows can see like 128 TB.

I beg to differ. A lot is being written in .NET now. Most enterprise apps tend to be .NET (from what I've seen) assuming they aren't Java.

Converting code to 64-bit isn't a case of just re-compiling it. Applications like Photoshop rely on a LOT of assembly, which can't just 'slap into an x64 compiler'. It needs to be re-written. Most apps need parts re-written to properly address the extra memory. Otherwise the only benefits are that the application will behave better, but it won't do any more than it otherwise would.

So the reason the move to 64-bit has been slow is due to a great many reasons, mainly lack of application support, due to to a lack of installed desktops, and a lack of installed desktops due to a lack of native applications. Until there's a 'killer app', x64 is just going to burble along and really not break through.

i've been using windows x64 for years now and find it very stable, its had its ups and downs but, its a nice OS, in my time using it i have seen many apps now taking advantage of the 64bit tech, the list started off small but is growing, and there was a time when itunes would let you use an ipod on a 64bit platform, however this has now been locked out, it is possible to do so but apple wont do.

Well that's the software being ****e - nothing to do with the iPhone platform. The protocol should be platform independent.

And yes, that should work
