Question Server ping

Hi. The past 2 days on battlelog our BF3 server has been showing a ping of 50-70 on average. Thats on battlelog not in game. Before Tuesday it was about 20-30. Not everyone sees this though. Some of our members see it about 60 and some see it about 20 but before the R18 patch we all seen it in the 20's I have 100mb internet and see most other servers at about 20-30 ping.

Why am I and some other people now seeing the server at 60-70 ping?

If you've got 100mb then you're almost certainly on VM. They've managed to balls up their network routing a lot of data destined for London via Amsterdam and then back to London, meaning you'll see the higher pings. Unfortunately it's down to your ISP and not something we can control.

Hi dentist. It's only since Tuesday that it's happening and out of the people seeing the ping increase I am the only one on VM. I see other servers in London with low pings including multiplay servers. It's very strange.

Can you submit a trace to us from the affected users please?

WinMTR format is probably the best. This can be downloaded from WinMTR V09 download on Fileplay (WinMTR-v09.zip)

Just export the results as a text file and attach them to a ticket. The more affected people that do this, the better.

Yep. Looks like this is actually going via Amsterdam as Dentist stated.

If you pop in a ticket we will further investigate and keep you updated.

As Deehem said this is clearly silly.

We will see what we can't do.

Because Virgin Media are preferring to route via their peering session with us at AMS-IX in Amsterdam rather than at a mutual point in London.

We should have taken down our session with them in Amsterdam now, which should resolve in the short term - and we have a ticket open to try and resolve in a way with slightly more finesse.

Are you seeing better response times now?

It is very strange. Sometimes the ping to the server is very low, like 20 then a few hours later it could be 60 or 70. And that traceroute thingy sometimes goes through different places.

Are you saying that this problem is temporary then? It's weird because other London servers are fine, it must be something that Virgin have done which specifically affects multiplay servers.

EDIT: Now seeing the server at 110 ping. Highest its been.

Sounds like since the major outage they had the other day they have not successfully fixed their routing. Capture the trace and raise it with support so they can contact Virgin's NOC about the issue.

Can you provide a new MTR with the 110 ping, so I can raise this with Virgin and hopefully poke people about it

The ping seems to be low at the minute but I bet later it will shoot up again. Maybe not to 110 but I will get a trace for you next time it gets high

Ok here is a trace while the ping on Battlelog is around 60-70. earlier tonight at around 6pm it was only 20!!!

Will try again if the ping goes over 100 like yesterday. I notice that this report shows less packet loss than any other I have had since this issue began.

Your server's IP is : 85.236.100.10 = Multiplay :: Conquest 24/7 {OCUK}

Just put the IP address into the tool and hit start.

Looks like VM are overloading their linx peering, need to get a reverse trace to be sure, so pop on to live support when this happens so we can get a ticket with traces from both directions.

On live support they think they cant connect to my router, but I am not aware of it blocking anything so I dont know why.

Any trace I run still shows packet loss at linx1.multiplay

That was posted from someone who uses my server K, ive passed what you said onto them thanks.

I have a virgin 10mb connection but i cant use it in the evenings due to jitter. I end up using our crappy adsl talk talk 2mb connection instead.:d

Virgin really are a poor isp.

I was browsing the VM support forums and it seems that I am far from having a poor connection.

I re-tested and at this moment the odd ping out was with multiplay (average ping 53 third from right 2nd from bottom):

While your overall latency isnt bad in these traces, in the second one your seeing 3% packet loss to the end point which isn't great and could well be the source of your issue.

Unfortunately routers do tend to drop icmp packet traces so the loss in the middle can be expected and not an indication of a problem, however when the end point also sees this loss it does indicate a problem but the standard behaviour means its almost impossible to find the issue.

To help dig more, you need to turn off dns resolution and past the text version so the results are readable

IP location is wrong on the second to last hop. It appears to be in the UK

What should I do next? Have tried the trace report from both sides as posted a above. I know you guys seem to be talking to isp's. Are VM gonna fix this? I never had any issues until recently so it's obviously something they have done. I have always liked them as an isp, very fast and with good pings, for me at least. But this is annoying.

All I have done though is post here and go on live support. Should I send all this info to support in a ticket?
