I took it down to the length of a session for legal reasons. I believe you're not allowed to use cookies to identify people returning to your site without their aggreement.

i have my ie6 set to accept all cookies and i'm always remembered (on the boards that is :D) Maybe thats a bad thing i don't know.

It's not about storing a cookie when you log in. It basically means that you aren't allowed to store a cookie that'll last for, say, 6 months and know who they are when they return later, as in greater than a few hours. So anything which could say "Welcome back John Smith" if they come back, say, 3 hours later is breaching this. That is of course unless they agree to you being able to remember them. I will add a checkbox to allow this some time this weekend :)
