I'm suffering a simler problem at the moment. I use a 512k Ntl cable and when playing CS i usauly get pings around 30-40 but sometimes all of a sudden it will shoot up to 2000 and i can play for a minute or two cause of major lag. I know Pukka is having the same problem with his connection. We both run simler setups as in home networks and pc's. I think Ntl are the cause of this minor problem and I hope it will fade away in time.

gee I thought I was the only one. Then it must be aol and how they are pinging through. I hope it gets sorted because I can't play online now. Maybe I will write them a e-mail and ask them about it

in UT. check your seting is set to modem and not lan. i left it on lan after i10 and was getting pings of 2000+ even tho the server browser was reporting pings of 100. Sounds pretty similar to your problem so id check that.

hmm, in Counter-****e the net_graph says 170/180 ish, but the TAB table says 210 ish.
Btw, I'm one of those unfortunates who's parents don't live in a broadband area.

i too have a home network (7pcs) linked to a NTL 512k connection, and i get average pings of 17-25 my highest ever was 42 and my lowest ever 2.
i dont know why i get such quallity pings whilst other NTL people suffer problems....
are the other machines in your house hogging bandwidth when your ping spikes up?
if so the easy answer to stop this is to install Radmin and shut them down when your playing :p:

It is AOL definately, i had it up to a couple of weeks ago, and u couldnt play any games at all. Also guzzles resources, has a stupid interface and takes an age to do anything.
Well im glad that ntl have reintroduced their dialup service, can now play games and its cheaper.
Was quite amusing, i phoned AOL to cancel, and the guy asked why, so i told him the truth, its ****!!!! He wasnt too impressed!

hehe yup! :)
I came home one day and found that my wife had installed AOL on our (read 'my') computer. At the time i did'nt have NTL broadband and we were using the another dial up service. Her excuse was 'well we get 50 hours free'. I tried explaining how crap it was but she did'nt understand. When we got broadband installed she phoned to cancel it and they asked the same question and tried to bribe her with another free month. She then volunteerd to do the cstomer servey and proceeded to say how utterly rubbish aol are etc etc etc

I had the internet conection set at LAN and not 28-56k setting and that was the trouble I was having. Still the aol dosn't go any higher than 32k and I can't get 56k, that is still a problem. I might have to change ISP's

Your problem probably results from a bad telephone line, phone the operator and ask them to increase "the gain" on your line and that may help. Also try a different modem, US robotics ones seem to kick ass over the £14 unbranded ones. :D
Also you will never get "56k" the best you can ever expect is 48. Sorry but that is just the best the technology allows using the british telephone system.
Else look for a new ISP as you said, or something better like ISDN or preferably ADSL/Cable.
