IMO

x box i think will be the dreamcast of this round of console releases.....(it would be a certanty if the evil driving force of the gates empire wasnt behind it)

having said that the only chance i see the GC having is from undercutting its competitors and being cheap.....sony ps2 despite being older and of a lesser spec, will win due to its enormous customer base left over from the ps/ps1.

try this if you dont believe me......
go into your local pub and ask who owns what, ps2, xbox, GC...there will almost guranteeably be more ps'2s than any other. obviousley you can argue thats because thet have been out longer. but that just builds on the point that there are more people out there who will buy ps2 games etc and make the brand more likley to be the outright winner.

Xbox- getting anything else would just be a crime.

In saying this i think they are going to be completely outsold by PS2 because they are a name you can trust in consoles, the same possibly with GC, but if i was crazy enough to buy a console, it would be the Xbox.

You should to.:)

That was the long answer. I could have just posted:

Halo.:D

Nintendo have a very good formula if it works dont change it!

There is nothing better than getting a group of mates around and playing Mario Kart. What it will probablyhave is a better graphics and a coupla extra tracks, it wont impart anything new to the genre, but hey its fun!

except that particular franchise is getting really old really fast. MC on the snes was masterfull, but the N64 version was a load-a-crapola.

xbox for me please! :) (btw i have a ps2 as well and i can say that both are great consoles)

as for the arguement about fan base and how the PS2 will win due to its PS1 success. errrrm, have you forgotten that when sony entered the market they were competing against nintendo AND sega? Just goes to show that the new guy can win the race if its marketed correctly, and Microsoft have a massive budget when it comes to marketing - you figure out the rest.

ok ok ok comparison;-

Xbox
Funky green and black thing. Highest powered games console out there. DECENT multiplayer that has been demonstrated and proven. Halo (you just cant beat it!). DOA3 rar. Support by big bastard company from hell. Unreal Championship (based on UT2003) will be available on it. plays DVDs. Costs £199

GameCube
Funky purple cube. Paperweight features (ie cubic and heavy). Non standard disks. Poor sounding japanese translations (like SUPER MONKEY BALL!!!!). Run by dying console company (look at n64). plays non standard hard-to-warez disks. Same old mario-b0llocks. Costs £129

my conclusion: XBOX ... its worth the extra 70 quid

(this is all my opinion so feel free to ignore it like most poor uneducated people do ;) ).

I'm standing by Nintendo purely because of 1 game.... Mario Kart. [not 64] Snes and GBA only. Awesome gameplay :)

true!

and you only need to look at future games like Project Ego http://www.bigbluebox.com/game/game.html to realise that its worth the extra £70

He's saying its a consideration people in the mass market will take into account

The dreamcast had a minor swell in sales when people realised how easy games for it were to pirate ;)

If you look at the PS1 - there was a whole industry around copying games. It kept the console alive a long time longer than it should have done and actually dragged in a lot of money for sony.

The same would happen in Xbox. MS will have made enough money before mass market pirates come along, then the hardware and games sales will spike again.

I might buy one when that happens :D Like that PSone I bought for a tener, got it mod chipped for free and spend 4 and a half hours coping games for it. 50 in one night :D

Xbox is alright. Has to have PGR though :D Come to think about it, I don't think I've played Halo yet

was it not true that Microsoft decided not to sell the x-box in hong kong because of the pirating industry? they would have lost money aparentley.

Besides GameCube all the way for me, i just need a games machine not a home meca hub of cheesy black and green-ness.

im turning 18 now i see my interest in games dwindleing (not multiplayer of course UT2003 yay)

Im having the same problem. My £25 dual head matrox G400's zoom facility is more interesting than a GF4's Pixel shaders and the grass texture in UT2003.

Im getting old (or senile) :/

LMAO, Microsoft wont let that happen! You wait until you see some next wave X Box games, games which cannot be programmed on any other console, then your see the error of your ways if you get a gamecube :) .

Gamecube is a wonderful designed console but, just like the N64, your prolly end up only getting about 1 game per month released for it in about a years time!

i think thats the thing, The GC is being marketed at the average gamer who wants a few good titles that are full of gameplay elements that work. They are'nt trying to break any moulds or genres.

I can honestly say that i will be playing games untill the day i die :D or at least untill my reflexes give out. I look forward to showing my kids all the old classics! :)

Can you tell me exactly why that awfully styled, underpowered, inflexible, crippled MS Windows PC will have games that cannot be programmed on any other console for technical reasons? There aren't any.

On the other hand, the games won't be *sold* on other consoles because of copyright and trademark issues, but that's no reason to stop games that play very similar coming out on other consoles with different names and aesthetics.

Because like it or not X Box is the most powerful console on the planet, and once developers test the X Box to the full (like the Hard Drive), you would not be able to do the same on any other console.

DirectX. Its most powerful asset :) A standardised, backward compatible graphics library.

Big Giant Head

afaik there's no reason x-box games couldn't run on PC, due to lack of power, its just because M$ want people to buy xboxes, TV's run at like 640x480 (I know its not exaclty that but I can't be arsed to look it up), so it looks horrible on a decent hi-definition monitor, when I can run halo in 1280x1024 anti aliasing on etc then I shall be happy :)

[NBK-IGC]Silk
13th May 2002, 13:37
I was on about other consoles :). And I doubt there is little chance that MS top titles will make it too the PC, they will want exclusives for the XBox.

Halo coming on the PC? Well I will belive it when I see it (or officialy announced at E3).

KermitTheFrag
13th May 2002, 13:40
err xbox runs just as smooth on non-interlaced HDTV at 1280x720 ;) It also doesnt need anti-aliasing on TV at the moment, and not on HDTV

Halo for PC was allegedly finished before Halo for xbox, they will likely release it when it will make more money selling copies on the PC than they will from bundling them with new xboxes

TelexStar
13th May 2002, 14:23
but then there are people like me who followed Halo so much that they will go and buy an xbox simply for Halo.

Development was well along for both the PC and Mac versions of Halo when M$ bought Bungie. It is looking questionable whether Halo will ever make it to the PC, and it is almost guaranteed never to appear on the Mac now.

the m$ buyout sucked big time hence the fact there are no longer myth 1 or 2 hosted on b.net

i speak to the bungie team every now and then and the have prommised that it will be on mac/pc

they we well into development before the buyout they would have been able to release pc/mac before or at the same time as x-box release imo

why would they not authorise it for the Mac? that would be like cutting your nose off to spite your big corperate face. I mean after all the Mac has MS Office, i don't really see the strategic advantage for MS to not release it on the Mac. - i could be wrong though - anyone?

ok i had a Gamecube since the weekend! and i also had a x-box for the past few weeks!

my opinion is to buy BOTH :)

but if you a poor m0ng then id have to go with gamecube by a wisker!

i love the xbox! just little things like being able to copy music onto it and HALO of course!!
but eh gamecube is great!

but the gamecube about a quarter the size!! the graphics are almost just as good (take a look at the Hoth level on Rouge SquadronII)

and it got great multi player games coming out on it!
and the new die hard game that gonna be like goldeneye looks amazing!

Xbox great but it got one game carrying the whole console! HALO
i dont like any other game apart from project gotham

BUT HEY BUY BOTH :)

The hard drive can be used to persist game state across reboots - not alot more.

The fact it's the most powerful console around only means your games can play faster, not that they can 'only' be programmed for the X-Box.

And Kerm, while DirectX 8 may mean more titles released, that's only because it's *easier* to write for DirectX 8, not because it can do things other rendering systems cannot.

surely thats the whole point??? if its easier it means developers will code for that instead of anything else.

Take the n64, sega saturn!! they were much more powerfull than their competators but they still deid because no one coded for them. xbox is easier and so more people will code for it.
