ok just built myself a nice dandy new pc!
it a pentium 4 1.8ghz running at 2ghz
on a epox 4bsda+ MB

i currently have the standard heatsink with an additional 92mm fan seated above it!

and my bios is showing temps of 47-52oC!!

is this acceptable or would you recommend that i get a better heat sink!

i not really sure what is the best running temp to have so can ya PLZ post ya thoughts :) Ta!

my p4 1.8 is currently idle @ 38 degrees with the stock heatsink on, it'll never go higher than 42 degrees under load (even at i10) no thermal paste other than the standard stuff that comes on the base of the heatsink

It does however have 4 80mm fans in the case, what's your case ambient temp?

well its about 25oC - 30oC depending on the room temp etc.

inside my case i have 3 80mm fans altthough only 2 are connected at the moment and 1 92mm which comes off a bracket and directly over the p4 heat sink!

i also used artic silver thermal compound!

so you think 50oC tooo high??? when it start damaging the cpu??

think i might have to get one of those big copper flower heatsinks and put my fan over the top of that!

Intel stuffs rated to about 90oC. I wouldnt worry about it until it hits about 65oC. The stock cooling is fine (albeit a little noisy imho).

Hints:-

a) ignore MBM and the bios. It just makes you paranoid.
b) get some sleep.
c) Chill

If you think the crapboxen (dell, compaq, hp etc) run at those temperatures and are perfectly stable :)

50oC is way to much IMO mine runs at about 35-39 and i have just a small 40mm fan on the rear as well as my psu fan and cpu fan. if i were u id either purchase some more cooling! or go to www.koolance.com and buy a water cooled pc! btw i have a duron 650

erm

b0llocks to guessing and adding fans ... heres some REAL info about the P4:-

don't forget cpu probes aren't affixed directly to the top of the core where it gets hottest so by the time you reach 70 on the sensor the core could be at 90

Err they are on the slug on intel chips :/ ... only Intel chipsets or asus ASICs seem to read that though. I dont think the SIS can read it :(

hmmmm how about that, was unaware of that one :)

I was sure the thermal probe on my old athlon was mounted on the mobo underneath the cpu core

athlons yes, but intel have had on die thermal sensing and readouts since the first series of FC-PGA chips and i8xx chipsets.

AMD are waaaay behind there.

would explain why my p4 runs the same temp as my athlon then ;)
