View Full Version : Certain rulez for cool CPU's

1) Small cases are good for LAN's, but don't often make good for getting the XP's under 50oC
2) Cheap big cases are also rubbish at cooling if the PSU and CDroms cut the case into 2. The hot at the bottom and the cold at the top.
3) Alu cases are usually the best. Usually.

Senario 1) Small case - 2 CDrom bays & the PSU overhangs the CPU. Not the best situation, but can be sorted quiet easily. Adding a fan on the bottom of the front is usually standard issue. This keeps the case temp down. It also aids the cooling of your PCI cards and HDD's. If your PSU didn't hang over the CPU you could mount a fan directly above the CPU to cool it better. Well, if you've got a mate that's got a bit drill you can cut a circle in the top of the case and add a chimeny exhaust. Now in my case, with a £10 alu HSF it's dropped the CPU temp from 60oC odd to 45oC [load]. That was will the fan extracting the hot air out. If you turn the fan upside down it'll blow cold air in. New CPU temp 35oC [load] 33oC [idle]. Case temp went above that, but then I turned the front fan back onto 7v :D.

senario 2 Medium case - 4 Cdrom bays. PSU doesn't overhand the CPU. Better because you can add a fan directly above the CPU(s). Also you can add a lian li esq exhaust fan that extracts hot air out. I haven't actually tried this, but my dual P3's sit at 31oC [idle] without any case fans. But that's just P3's :D Chimney fans can still be added, but there's not much point. Unless they're above your CPU they won't make much difference + more noise.

senario 3 Huge case - 6 Cdroms. If you get a cheap one then chances are the PSU will be in the same place as the medium's. Lots of empty space in the roof. If you can then try and move it to the top of the case. This may require some cutting. :( With huge case you can put lots of fans. but in turn lots of fans create lots of noise = bad. Ask Kermit. Quiet fast PC's. You'll probably want to run all your fans at 7v or 5v if you have 10 80mm ones. Less noise to sleep with then. :)

"having your cake and eating it" :)

quietpc (http://www.quietpc.com) is a good place to start. Right Kermit?

big delta's n ystech's all the way...

personaly i have 2nd senario. got a 120 in front along with a 92 and 2 80's out back.

also have a 120cfm ystech on top but that makes little difference. but its not there for temps as i never have it on... just to look good and float cd's on

to keep it quiet...

1) Use PAPST fans they make les noise than a dead church mouse.

2) Use a Zahlman Flower Heatsink with a large PAPST fan over it set at half speed using a reostat

3) Get some god dam sound proofing! Available from
OVERCLOCKERS (http://www.overclockers.co.uk) or from COOLCASEMODS (http://www.coolcasemods.com)

4) Get a Zahlman GFX card cooler, replaces fan cos these are often noisy. from OcUk.

thatll make that baby silent but deadly, also wont sound like a jubo taking off :D

LOL esk! you posted that trying to make out that you know exactly what your doing! since when did you take the fan off your gfx????

not to my recolection!

and your main fan not funning at half speed as a reostat only works witha fan running at 4500rpm and as mine without a reostat is currently at 2300rpm-2500rpm i think that cute little black box in your case is actually just taking up space :)

thats my next stage to make my system as quiet but cool as possible. I just "toss" and "turn" all night if im trying to download with the machine on all night.

Dizzie I dont quite fit your description of a medium case mines closer to a large case, but with points which you claim point to poor cooling that you mention in a small case but I run at temps closer to a well cooled Medium case.

I use an enermax psu which as a fan on the base that generally points over the cpu, this is in outtake fan so draws the warm air away from the cpu I have in intake fan that moves the air accross a cooling channel that goes alone the top length of the case and down over all the drives, making them all feel nice and cool., then in intake fan base of the machine at the front, then an intake fan with dedicated cpu vent at the rear. At my on load my cpu is about 27-35c from just 2 fans this is a an oc'd 1900.
case temp is higher at around 40-47c.

What im trying to say it doesnt really matter what size case you have if the jobs done right in the first place you dont get silly high temps, etc

As said my only problem is noise but my plan to fix this is to get one Zahlman Flower Heatsink and allow the cpu fan to be switched between 7 and 12v, then at a flick of a switch all intake/outtake fans will just turn off leaving the HD Cooler and cpu fan running (and eneramx fans) for as best as ill get silient running.

<-- expert on quiet

buy an f'ing intel + sling out the geforce 65 turbo-nutter-bastard + take a visit to http://www.quietpc.com/

Im idling at 25oC, max load 40oC with just a quiet HSF and Power supply fan. There are NO OTHER FANS in the ENTIRE system. I cant even hear it when im asleep.

Then again this is a workstation, not a games machine (although I take it to LANs).

my workstation is currently, er ACTUALLY SILENT!!!!

I hace to place my ear on the aperture to the PSU to hear anything.

Phear Meh!

and thats with a tbird as well. Although i do have the loudest PC i have ever heard. (unfortunately i didnt get to hear Wishy's 120mm delta at i10)

Where were you when the lights dimmed and I thought a series of SAS helicopters were landing on the racecourse :D

Deltas = too much noise

gifted shut up!!! are you following me around ? :D

I happen to KNOW these things, as i read up on it,

1) i know mines running at full speed but im saying the option is there to turn it down with the fan that is supplied (the one i gave you)

2) i was going to by the one to put on your GFX card and i nkow that you can take it off very simply!

SO I DO KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT DANIEL! SO SHUT DA FUK UP T4RT! :D

Dizzy, wishys delta was so loud, I thretened to push is head through it if he didnt turn it of, right the hell now. Were talking talking rock concert loud.

if swap your gfx heatsink with the fanless silent one you can't remove it. it says so on the quietpc.com site.

I would have got myself a couple of those. if it didnt require a new PSU as well :/

KermitTheFrag

yes because you have to use thermal epoxy to stick it. which is more likely to kill the chip removing it ...

ray that one you gave me only runs at 2500rpm my friend! so even wid that it would do bog all! :)

and i know you bought the memory heatsink! (if you read into it you would know ALL geforce 3 cards already have it!)
and you cant take the ruddy fan off as it glued with epoxy!!!

so NUH LOL :p:

I cut the noise in my case loads when I:

1. Replaced my old cheap Heatsink and fan with a Zelman Flower.

2. Bought a nice new enermax PSU (altough quitepc's psu's are quite, i just didn't think they were worth the money. plus i have to keep fans on in my pc cause of hdd's and gfx card run rather warm without them)

3. Bought a Digi Doc 5 to control my fans so they now turn on and off when the case warms up and cools down. quiet often they are not used but on warm days you can hear them spin up.

4. I use evercools fans that are perminantly turned on and ystechs that turn on when they are needed. Evercools are that little bit more quite then the ystechs.

5. The fan what cools my hdd's on the front of my case (Chieftec Scorpio) is on a Zelman Fan Mate 1 so it spin quiter to keep to noise down a little more.

6. Sound proofed my case.

Changing PSU and heatsink to a better quality and designed product make all the diffrence IMO. You get what you pay for.

Eskimo
9th May 2002, 06:52
Well you can take the fan off... maybe not the heatsink but you can deffinatly take the fan off

And if yours is running at 2500.... why the hell did they supply it ?

Thats the fan that come in the Zahlman kit, you can still turn it down according to them on the box...

Gifted
9th May 2002, 07:08
yea but ti think you can only turn it down by altering the vaoltage! those reostats made for delta fans mainly!!

to stop you getting sucked into the case :)

anyhow i not complaining i can hardly hear my pc :) YAY
plus i dont have it in my bedroom so it doesnt affect my sleeping patterns! :)

Put your pc in another room then. No matter what kit i'd put on a pc i could still hear it when i'm trying to get to sleep at night.
What is the need to keep your pc on all night any hows?

lol you havent heard mine then :) ... or not heard as it goes.

The reason mine is on all night is my web site is currently running off it ;)

Ahh good one, I have an old 486 running smoothwall doing that job with no fans and the hdd in a silent drive. you may of seen the picture before.

If it has any fans in it i can hear it. I need complete quite for me to get to sleep. I don't know why but droning and constant noise keep me awake. When I'm sleeping its almost impossable to wake me up.

the 120mm Delta is basically

59 Db
4000 RPM
36 Watt (3A @ 12V)
190 CFM

In short, it owns anything, very very very very powerful, and also to noisy to use. Basically think delta 60mm, with your ear right next to it because its mounted on the exterior of the case.

At the end of the day, i can't use it most the time, but at last its good for the "My fans noisier than yours" factor :D Oh yes, and you can threaten to feed pe0ns to it.

Err - it is completely silent! Seriously!

Then the CPU fan spins at full whack you can hardly hear it when your ear is 5mm away in a silent room. the power supply is the same. The hard disk is the same. 500mm away, its totally inaudible even whilst thrashing disks going full whack! Being Intel, it doesnt have ANY case fans either and runs cool. It was build as an audio workstation, which means it's got some fairly high tech noise prevention stuff in it. The case is being replaced with an acoustically dampened one too at some point.

I have plenty of witnesses to the fact that it's silent :)

Dizzie

I can't actually vouch for that Kermit because I couldn't hear it.
Lol :D

It is silent - the way it should be.
