When I started my current job I thought that I'd be writting programs and doing things that I enjoy. Starting salary was 11k + car, which was nice. So why does my company pay me all that and then give me jobs that a spotty work experience schooly could do?
Today I:
Cut CD sleves into squares to put in CD wallets
Burnt some CD's for reports
Heat Binded some reports
Made tea.
Put returned faxes into return ID order.
Packaged some reports and franked them for the post.
See what I mean?

Ya, I get paid about 11k a year for this placement coding-drone job - just a pity that placements are expendable.
Along came cost-cutting, as all the investors are slamming their wallets shut for a while, and we have to go now :( (Last day today - I'm not bitter ;) ).
'course everyone around me is paid twice that...

My first job was £13k for all-round tech support and Mr.Fixit.
All the positions I've applied for lately are starting at £16k-£17k though they're generally tech support of one kind or another. Just so that there is some sense of scale in salaries, £17k in this area has about as much spending power as £23k-£24k in a city.

I dont really have an official working title, its kinda IT and Network support and software development.
It involves lots of it and network supports :) oh and software devopment, oracles/access dbs, plus vb programing.
I earn not too far from 30k+ year +bonus (no and then get the bonus). Its ot bad to say 3/4 years ago I started the job on £98 a week :)
My day at work yesterday ...
Moad marmite on toast and cup of black coffee
loaded mpuk forums
loaded ccm forums
sents email everywhere
did I bit of network schematic drawings in visio
Meeting inrgards to upgrading kilostream pipes to depots to faster lines.
Browsed internet for a region hack for a dvd player :) (found it btw)
and then skanked of home
btw that particular day I started at 10am and finished at 4pm ;)

the main reason the IT business is dying more correctly IT staff at big firms is because thier particular departments dont actually make any revenue, but they spend more money then any other department, they buy computer gear, etc and you always notice how IT managers/staff have the best laptops in the compnay and biggest monitors and cool gadjets like mp3 players and cameras, dvd rewriters etc (well thats the case where I work). So many companies cant afford to emply them really and the try to cope with the maintence without dedicated knowledgable staff (B&Q is and example of this).
You should really be looking into programing reading about this is a dying trend with no proper professionals joingin the programming world thats why these jobs pay high because they are rare. And wouldnt you be proud to see your name top of the credits as a topwriter for lets say MOH :).

Well I was earning £15k on a senior programming job, ie extensive knowledge of systems at ALL levels required. F'ing pisstake esp as I earned £7k on f'king ebay and resellers that year and didnt have to get off my arse or write one line of code at all!
If it wasnt for the nice fat pipe, I wouldnt have stayed.
btw I've been writing C/C++ since I was 12 so I've been there, done that. Thats nearly 10 years and there isnt ONE company out there that has one half assed bit of respect for their employees and pay the going rate...

I got 13 1/2k for my placement year. And I had a great time, went on loads of trips to london, piss ups down the pub etc.
Sounds like you were a bit unlucky, or I was extremely lucky.

M-Audio Delta Audiophile sound card. Professional 24-bit 96KHz card. http://www.m-audio.com/products/m-audio/audiophile.php
Someone offered me £100 for it so I pulled the auction.

Their stuff is UTTER CRAP. It looks nice but most stuff you get from richer sounds sounds is considerably better in build quality AND sound quality. Plus theres no proprietry interconnects etc. Buy an Arcam amp + some tannoys and a half decent CD player and you're 1000% better than B&O at 1/10th of the cost :)
Either than or a Linn all in one ;)
