Right, i need some help/advice from some of you esteemed hardware gurus.
I don't know anything about this kinda stuff. what exactly am i looking for? I need a monitor (17") that refreshes at least at 85hz at my chosen res - 1024*768
Is there anything else i should be looking for? my budget is probably about about £400-500 (is that realistic?)
any help would be much appreciated.
ta :)

I'd suggest Sony CPD-G200 CRT (not LCD).
Does 1024x768 @ 120Hz, will do up to 2048x1536 @ 60Hz (yes a 17"!!!), is crystal clear, dual inputs, has pretty damn accurate consistent colours (unlike TFTs due to viewing angle) and they are very reliable. Looks better than a TFT any day!! Plus it does different resolutions without pixel munging and syncs on green. All for £230.
LCD = waste of money imho (unless your desk is 2 foot square). Get a 17/19" FD Trinitron CRT. They kill Iiyama and diamondtrons dead too.

those Trinitrons are flat screens :D
TFTs give me a headache after a while - the intensity and colour temperature is just wrong.

Trinitron 0wns
both my monitor and t.v have flatscreen trinitron screens and they are clear, crisp and don't look bow like normal screens.
Why do you need tft? when tube screens are far more clearer and sharp. I'd wait a few more years fot TFT and Plasma screens to get a lot better.

I need a TFT because humping my CRT to lans is becoming irritating, the rest of the year it would be setup in addition to my CRT.

my 17" monitor died the other day :(
so i have to keep swaping the cable between my PCs using my ****ty 15"
mind you i can get:
http://www.likom.com.my/ProsServ/DP/CRT/CTR_19K.asp
for £130 + VAT + Delivery (about £160 in total)
which will b very nice :D
i'd go for a flat panel screen (plasma LCD what ever...) but i'd prefer a bigger screen to work on, and with the price i can get that one, :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

your price range is easily enough for a 1024X768 15"TFT screen but not a 17"tft screen (note my 15" tft is almost exactly the same viewable area as the 17" CRT that it replaced)(also 17" tft screens run native at a higher res. than 1024X768 so 1024X768 will apear slightly blocky and out of focus), however you will be hard pressed to find one that refreshes faster than 75Hz.
Why do you need 85Hz? due to the way that tft screens display the picture(all at once rather than using scan lines) 60Hz+ is fine for gaming. We (myself, Zeb and CyberGerbil) all run TFT screens for gaming with no trouble at all (note you will have to ramp up the gamma though).

i recentley brought this 15" tft (belinea 15 35 10) and i must say i am very happy with it. i have it here at home for dual monitor setup and now i have a nice light monitor to take to lans with me.

Never, i repeat NEVER buy belinea CRT's there just ****, the PSU makes this really awful clunk and the screen looks like its degaussing every time you change screen res

belinea tft's, once you've realised their crap you can't even use them for storing your goldfish in (the one good features of the crts ;))

I wouldn't be so hard on belinea monitors.
I bought my 21" Belinea CRT over 3 years ago, and it has served me faithfully ever since. I have nothing to complain about it.

There is absoloutley nothing wrong with this TFT
it sits here as a 2nd monitor
and it plays games well for lans.
Finally, DVDs and games are displayed perfectly.
from toms hardware.
but regardless to reviews i actually do find this monitor very good.
ok so it has a low viewing angle but that does not bother me. im happy with the monitor.
and i dont think im impotent.... yet...
