anyone know if its worth kicking up a fuss?
there appears to be someone grinding bits of metal up over the IT dept partition and smashing stuff. Its VERY loud and is doing my ****ing head in.
any info on health and safety/stress at work would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I think at more than 70-80 decibels they're required to give you protective headgear
and you can't work at more than 100
but I doubt you're anywhere near 100db ;)
I think its around that (this is from my shaky memory of some stuff I learn in physics don't take it as gospel)

err steel + electric grinder thing ~ 80db i reckon.
/me goes to bitch to manager ;)

that's just plain rude! Do they have no respect for the hard-working intellectual types??? :p:

Of course Kermit is hard working!
I mean i'm sure he only came onto these forums during the day to ask an important health and safety question! :p:
What did the manager say kermit?
:D

basically yeah.
which is why i spam forums all day... its called "doing the work you're paid for" ie about 2 hours a day on my salary :p:
I could earn more serving fries at the moment -- the bit that gets me is that you dont even need a clue to do that job :D

stop moaning kerm.
Me and Jimi had to put up with a whole month of some blokes run round on the roof and re-placing the roof.
LOTS of banging and shouting.
and every tuesday and friday we are in a room where the BIG pipe that they chuck the bits of old roof down and thats moma load!

we had that a while back when they were tarring. oh and a few months ago they decided to build a new server room right next to my desk.
Oh and we've got a heater which knocks out a continuous wooshing sound loudly and blows all the **** around the office....
plus some bastard keeps going past with a trolley with a squeaky wheel.

You may want to check up your rights at the site above. But I believe due to temparary work measures you could maybe get to stay out of the office until the work is complete.
Quote err steel + electric grinder thing ~ 80db i reckon. that maybe the case....if your are the one performing the work. its going to be lower for yourslef. Just complain and see what they do, if they tell yah to live with it then yoiu start a fuss.

Further to what gez said this might help (http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/fnis6.htm)
Of course it depends on the proximity of noise, any barriers (ie cubicle walls) in the way, but it also helps in the way you approach the problem with your manager
Going up to he/she and saying 'its too loud I can't work its illegal' is not going to work, but 'Its quite loud in here, can I have adequate ear protection to work with, something that the HSE recommends perhaps?' will get you further.
As a manager who performs H+S risk assessments every couple of days, that would put the ****s up me!
Of course you could stop being a lazy wuss and do some work for a change!
Only joking..........

Should be present at SL8 for any dues to be paid (b33r, rap3age, etc)

LOL. my bedroom is a conversion of the garage connected to our house. and i managed to sleep through having the roof resurfaced :)
but seriously tho. if 1 delta 80mm screamer is 48db. does that mean that 2 of them are 96db? :)

no it doesn't work like that
there's a formula somewhere but I can't remember where
basically every 10 decibels is 10x the noise level
so 60db is 10x 50db
so 2x 48db screamers is prolly somewhere around 55-60db
I think

problem solved. the old "its affecting my concentration and my work quality" worked - esp after i just buggered the report printing system by accident and walked around shouting.

BGH... (not sure about this either) but I think that the way it works is the volume is double for every 3 decibel increase.
Decibels to Volume intensity.
3 = 1
6 = 2
9 = 4
12 = 8
15 = 16
18 = 32
21 = 64 etc etc
I'll see if I can track something down on it.

Actually for every 3dB increase the power required is double. So if for example:
60dB = 30W
63dB = 60W
66dB = 120W
69dB = 240W
etc. etc.

mmmm its the richter scale where it 10x for every unit ;)
whatever
I threw my physics books away ;)

He he, just trust me on this one. I didn't spend three years getting into debt for nothing you know.

it's my understanding 30db is good for a woman :D

LOL, is that what she told you...
Jarmin

tis true! people say it makes them do that thing that most men cant do to them. So women say anyway.

/me slaps Jarmin until his eyes fall out.
That's 25Hz - 30Hz NOT dB at all. Hz is the unit of cycles per second and dB is an absolute indicator of sound power per unit area.

Max power tried that...
it didnt work...
yes and it is 30hz jarmin not Db :P
