i thought this was supposed to be a forum for free chat?

but someone, mentioning no names, keeps closing threads left right and centre.

can i ask why? This is a General Chat forum after all

I agree!

Who closed the thread dedicated to me?

ffs, it wasnt doing any harm you know.

geez, I mean I know your trying to loose the worst of the spammage but this is just stupid!

And there never seems to be any explanations for why the threads have been closed either...

:(

GeeDee

Its probably due to usage of VBB and bandwidth costs are increasing. Personally I think VBB is about the most OTT inefficient chunk of forum software on the planet :p: ....

/me plugs http://www.phpbb.com/

cheap, fast and no 300k pages full of poorly optimised html.

Come on, i mean what exatcly is 'spam'?

While the majority of these posts might to be considered intellectual they are not spam - this is a general chat forum, somewhere where people can just chill out, have a laugh with each other, and chat.

and besides, one day we'll be visited by aliens who will say . . .

"WE DEMAND TO SEE YOUR SPAM!! SHOW US YOUR SPAM OR WE'LL DECINEGRATE YOUR PUNY PLANET! MUHAHAHAHAHA"

and what will we have to show them? nadda!

"sorry mr alien sir but someone took away all our spam! *cough*catachan*cough*

I doubt it m8.

Why close threads such as MINE and leave ones that have about 10 replies a minute?

How can u close the Rooth thread? it should be left to see if it can be the longest thread in the history of the world!

TelexStar
1st February 2002, 15:53
i don't think the right hand knows what the left hand is doing!

GeeDee
1st February 2002, 15:55
yer, I mean what is going on?

Rooth is now closed - but probably the fastest growing thread of all time is still open! The one thread that actually constiutes spam!

geez.

*sigh*

...and maybe a couple of others. Those 5 people are the creators of more than 2/3 of the posts on these boards. It says something that they only registered in the past few months and yet have hundreds of posts already (if not thousands). For a comparison, look at the registration date for me and the number of posts I've made in that time. :alien:

I'm seriously considering closing those 'game' threads. It's useless having them at the top of the page constantly.

I mean Christ guys, go and do your jobs, your education. You don't have to sit on these forums 24/7 you know.

Some of us clearly dont have lives, have lives that would scare the crap out of you or have jobs that are so **** that any form of escape is good. Escape from reality for a bit. Escape from the pain of doing mind numbingly crap things or from the crap piled them.

Multiplay provided a service which unites these poor sods and provides them with sanity, albeit in a pointless way, but its sanity. And we're all interested in similar things. I mean, despite the spam populous, we're all gamers, and attend I-series events (with a couple of exceptions).

Life isnt ALL games. Nothing wrong with discussion, however strange and off topic. I mean look at slashdot. Success is judged in different ways.

Just my alternative perspective.

A compromise ie moving threads would be more appropriate IMHO and goes along more with internet culture.

thats very well put kermit.

I am not going to dispute the fact that I am a relatively high poster, but I do really try not to post irrelevantly, just to increase my post count or whatever.

And I totally agree with kermit - an awful lot of my discussions that I have with my friends end up more inane than you can possibly imagine - and I don't see how this is any different. Most people who post here share the common interest of games and computing in some respect, but that doesn't mean we can't have off topic and whacky convsersations does it?

I'm all for trying to stop the pattern that had started here of new users posting new threads that in actual fact had REALLY no point to them and were just vain attempts to up post counts or kill some spare time, but some of the threads that have been closed were ongoing discussions. Albeit maybe not about the original topic, but still interesting discussions.

Finally, Zenith - some of us obviously have more time than you, and are able to take a more active role than you on the forums. I have a lot of spare time at college, as a result of an IT course in which I can cover in one lesson about two weeks worth of work for the majority of the class and I would have thought that the fact that I spend a fair amount of that time here involved in discussions should be taken as a compliment, rather than trying to make me out to be some weirdo who never does anything aside from post crap.

Thanks for your time! I hope I made sense! :)

OK then, if I feel a topic belongs in the rants forum, I'll move it instead of closing it. Then you can still carry on with whatever you want :)

I just want to agree with GeeDee, yes Zenith we do post alot and i post alot for the same reason as GeeDee we are in an immensly boring course which we could cover in a couple of weeks. Now correct me if im wrong but discussions on these forums happen because people join in the conversations? You are critising us for joining in a conversation? personally i think thats rather sad. GeeDee has explained why we post alot but not only that but we post because we have an interest in what is being said. If you dont like that i appologise but get over it
