Due to fatally low sales, Microsoft is forced to discontinue the Xbox
January 28, 2002
After what seemed to be a succesful launch, Microsoft has now revealed that the Xbox will have to be discontinued, and all impending games are to be cancelled. This seems to fly in the face of previous market research where the Xbox was said to have sold in excess of one million units through the holiday season. However, it was revealed in a press release this afternoon, that those numbers were infact highly inaccurate, and that Microsoft had withheld sales data when their numbers did not live up to expectations.
In truth, the Xbox sold approximately 400,000 units from launch until the new year. This and the fact that Microsoft was making a loss of around $300 per console made it unfeasable to continue. Software sales were also somewhat low, with Halo being the only significant title.
Microsoft has also cancelled releasing the Xbox in Japan, as one could see the true desperation in the move to release a "Special Edition" in a last ditch attempt to recoup losses. Apparently, Japan was the straw that broke the camel's back, as the cost of breaking into a new market with low projected sales was not deemed practical even by the money-laden Microsoft.
We here at IGN Xbox will continue to support the Xbox, despite the few games available much in the same way that we have supported the Dreamcast.

Not a bad little rumour, I doubt with M$ money they would discontinue the console before it's European or Japanese release, they would at least release it in those terretories to see if they could make their money back for designing the console.

Just so you don't fall for it here is how they did it:

Not that again. That is the oldest trick in the book. They use the @ and put in their own IP adress and thus they can use any adress in front of it that they want. It is FAKE.

The Game Cube has outsold the X Box in the US and since it's only £150 I think it will do well with families but its definately the X Box for me.

as in dual 1GHz. I'd certainly not say no there :)
Personally I think (even at the price that it is), that it's kind of killed the PC dead for power.

This is the whole MS vs SONY thing.
One of my pals works for Microsoft, and he says the MS 'motto' this year is "kill sony".
To be quite honest im sick of it. Dont buy either of the consoles, build your pc from scraps of silicon and grab a *nix distro. You are now not feeding cash to a company with world domination as a priority. sorted.

if i wanted somethingi could not fiddle with, upgrade, play about with, I WOULD BUY A MAC
However, i want to be able to mess about with the internals, and also, what sort of case modding does an X-box or PS2 allow.
Boring as an empty pint glass.
