who stole the image code?

Catachan
29th January 2002, 15:39
Personally I'd say no, unless Wizzo says otherwise. IMG code has the habit of being SERIOUSLY abused!

I've seen this happen on other sites, so my vote is no.

No,

Its an option in your signiture feild that lets you link to an image on your webspace etc.

If images were allowed in signatures, I would stop using these forums.

It is one of the most stupid, braindead fsckwitted idea - it means that people might start off with a simple 100x50 signature, logo or similar, but soon ends up an animation/size/colour fest, with logos that take up 2/3 of a decent size screen or more, rapid flashing colours and animation.

The only way I would consider it OK, is if it was limited to, say a few hundred pixels wide by 30 or so high, and limited to jpegs.

Even then, it would be more than is really needed. Netiquette states that a signature should be no more than four lines long. My forums sig is 2, my email sig is 1.

Sorry, Netiquette doesn't "state" anything, but that is netiquette :)

If you introduce image code, I'm gonna link a 20 meg file into my sig until someone turns it off!

Ruth

I didnt realise there was a netiqutte for signatures. I think they should put that in a manual or something....

/me fiddles with her sig, just to please afty

i do agree with alot of you when it comes to massive image siges

and yes, jarmin, that would get really annoying, really fast ;)

but if its used responsibly it can look quite nice for example . . . . .

Ruth

Oh My God, it's so big!!! (I bet thats the first time you've heard someone say that :p: )

It's really quite beastly. I'd hate to have to scroll down a page full of those things...especially with the current rate of spam.

It'd look nice if it was smaller.

On the b0ned forums, Mingtea had a big huuuge sig thingy and it scared me. Twas very nasty. Didnt tell him that though....

And hey, size does matter. Of course it matters! It just depends in what context....

It's like the manual for letting ladies through a doorway first, or for not putting something on your fork until you've finished chewing what's already in your mouth - it's not written, it just is :)

Ruth
31st January 2002, 14:48
You know how blokes are supposed to let ladies through first, are lasses supposed to hold doors open for guys?

And at my college, if you hold a door open for anyone you are stared at like an alien.

Or maybe thats just how people look at me anyway.....

TelexStar
1st February 2002, 07:52
It some countries its actually polite to go through doors first! it shows that your scouting ahead for any danger that may befall the lady!

Angelus
1st February 2002, 08:50
Thats true but its generally considered better manners to open a door for a lady.

It goes back to the very old days when guys would put their coats over puddles so the women wouldn't get wet. Its like a mark of respect or something

TelexStar
1st February 2002, 11:32
and you'd feel right as rain when some axe weilding mad man comes and gently implants his axe into he chest of the lady you were just opening the door for? Well i spose you were polite :D

Angelus
1st February 2002, 11:36
LOL! depends on the "lady" lol.

But really how likely is it that that would happen?

TelexStar
1st February 2002, 11:38
true, i mean after all, you would have prolly sucked her blood out before she'd even got to the door! :D

Angelus

Ok, I spend most of my time on the internet on forums.overclockers.co.uk - they allow it. It's very rarely abused, they have rules on sig image size (550x125 max - http://www.liquid2k.net/groovycarrot/ocuk/sigs.html is an example). They brighten things up, make the whole forums look better, they make it a lot easier to find your own posts quickly... I've never seen it abused before. They do have rules, like the sig image size, and if an image is too big but necessary they just tell you to put a link to it in your post. It does work... 'onist!

If you want to find your own posts get a custom avatar. simple.

image codes in sigs can look good but and i say this from experience can be a nightmare.

At OCUK before we implimented the sig size rules we had some people with sigs that were 10-15 lines of text and one or two with massive pics (and many more with pics that were in the 50-100k size*)

It's a pain making sure people keep to the rules and the fuss that was created when we first started the rule was amazing (i know severall of the other mods were up all night dealing with complaints).

*The prize has to go to a guy who in about June 2001 had a 2mb (yes 2 megabyte) animated gif of the fight scene between Darthmaul and Obi-Wan

Mm, I have one. It's just not particularly obvious... guess I could just take the time to spot for my name, but that'd be too much hassle :)

Werewolf: Yeah, I remember the sigs before the rule... yes, browsing the forums was... interesting. Just didn't bother with my own sig at the time... Wasn't around for the 2mb gif though, that's just ridiculous. I just think that if there's a rule and people with common sense then as a general thing people will stick to it, hopefully with as few exceptions as possible, although I realise realistically there are going to be some idiots who don't bother with the rules.

the star wars gif was weird

i remember noticing the page was taking ages to load, but it wasn't until someone pointed it out that i realised what it was (and i was on cable) :)

Personally i quite like smart image sigs, some people have a real talent for them :)

But i can see the reason behind not wanting to allow image code in sigs, we still have to send out severall reminders to people a day about their sigs and in some cases the admin has had to delete a users sig after several warnings have been ignored.

Although i must admit i love the custom avatars here they beat an image sig in a number of ways (faster download times and they don't add to the length of the average post) :)

When it comes down to it it's up to the server admins to decide what they prefer (and what they think is best for their forums), custom avatars, image sigs or none of the above.
Hopefully listening to suggestions from users where possible*

My current sig at OCUK (i made it an emial link there), one of the regulers at OCUK made it for me (http://www.werewolvesforhire.co.uk/images/ocuk/dons/werewolfsig.jpg)
One of my earlier attempts at a sig (http://www.werewolvesforhire.co.uk/images/ocuk/dons/sigs/werewolfsig1.jpg) :)

*Having said that i know that whatever you do as an admin of a forum will usually have half the people saying thanks, half saying WTF are you smoking, and half threatening to kill you ;)

Do what everyone else in forum managment does, set a limit for sig pictures and text.

i.e total sig size = 7 lines of text or 3 lines and an image (of specified size)

my current signature on most forums is this IMG

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/a.anderson10/newsig3.jpg
then 2 lines of text

GroovyCarrot

http://www.liquid2k.com/groovycarrot/ocuk/tempest-pro.jpg is my current one... I quite like it. I like custom avatars, but I prefer sig images because you can have more space to work. There's no way I could have done anything like that in an avatar...

/me wanders off to make an avatar in anything other than paint...

I guess we just have to leave it up to the admin to decide anyway...
