I'm planning to set up a couple of dedicated servers for Half Life and Counter Strike. But before I do, I'd like some advice on what is the minimum spec machine I could get away with using for the task.
Cheers

It all depends on how many people can play on your server at a time. I have ran a CS dedicated server on an AMD 1ghz Athlon with 512mb RAM and it ran perfectley on 28 players. You might be able to get away with an AMD Duron 800, but I would keep ram to around 512, no lower than 256. Everyone says run Linux dedicated servers atm (which is a good idea of course) but our clan server ran perfectley on a win-32 OS, so dont be too worried about having Linux.
Hope it helps

What OS are you running?

I'll be using Windows 98 or 2000 or XP - definitely not any flavour of unix or linux.

I must say don't run HL server on XP. Personally I haven't had problems but people I know have said it can become quite unstable. Stick with 98SE or 2k.

And I'd say go with Win98SE cos I've had problems with Win 98 machines trying to connect to a Win 2K server but never the other way around.
Those specs above were about right:
800 MHz
256 Mb RAM (minimum)
Those will comfortably run a dedicaed server (even had a 16 player server run well on a PII 500 with 128Mb RAM)

I think for network games you could get away with a P500 and 128mb ram. For net server hosting its normally more a case of your upload.

Well it looks like I am probably going to go with a Duron 800 and 256Mb Ram for running HL and mods, and an AMD K6-2 450 with 128Mb Ram for running Quake versions and maybe UT.

I have recently aquired 2 pc's and am thinking of not only hosting servers for my fav games (hl, cs, flf, q3, etc). Also I want to host my site (www.icenians.com) i have recently made an ftp service and forum, email (signup) etc.
My specs are:
pc1
amd 1.4
512 ddr
40 gig
cdwr
dvd
g-f 2 mx
sb live plat
win xp
pc2
amd 1.533 (xp 1800)
512 sdr
70 gig
g-f 2 mx
cdwr
sb live plat
win xp
so do u think that i would get away with using pc1 ?
is it possible to host games and a site ?

One thing are you looking at hosting on the net or just local lan events. As I think you will find that it's recommended that you have at least 2Mb Lease line.

You can host on a 512kbps connection (ADSL, Cable) but olny if it's not that big of site. Anything big, with expected large viewing numbers needs a leasedline as MadMac said.
Plus you don't need that big of a computer to host a webbie, a P133 should do.

I was talking about hosting Game Servers, web sites you can host with two tin cans and a piece of string.

i heard some of jolts cs servers were K6-2 500's 8)
when 1.1 came out though some go a lot better to play on than others.
Oh yeah our (linux)LAN server is a P2 400, had 28 people on it without sweat one guy a windows server with about double the spec and it only suported 16 smoothly

My old dod clan were made up of quite alot of jolt league and public dod admins, so we could supposibley get discounts on priv. servers. Jolt servers use a Linux OS to host there servers. Even though we had discounts we decided to purchase a BW public server. Most people admited out server was far supperior in stability, the smothness and speed, even though it was a win32 OS and running from America that other clans jolt servers in UK.
So Linux is not always superior.. but 99% of the time it is
Ohh the stability, speed etc. might have also been because the heavy £109 a month our clan paid for the server (Im sure it was £109)

Out of interest:
P266 - 128Mb RAM - Win 2K Pro?
Enough for 8 player CS?

SC im not really sure.. if you clock the CPU to 300-350Mhz I believe it would vastley help. Put some more ram in aswell, you need at least a 256. With those small improvments it might be able to take the strain.
r3plica should do m8

I tried a 233 with 64RAM and after 12 players dedicated it started to slow. That was running 2000pro.
I also had a PII 400 with 512RAM and that started to slow with 12 people including myself, who was playing on it aswell as hosting the game :D

People are talking PC spec. Does anyone know what upload you need to run these servers?
I have a max cap of 116kB/s

I found this after a quick Google, but I'm not sure how accurate it is ... maybe one of the server guys can shed some more light on it once they are awake.
