k i have had cable (NTL) for a bit now and its cool. my mate (sn8kez) is coming up to live with me. now we need to share my cable connection between about 3 computers (including my mac). the thing is we both want IP addresses, sn8kez recons if he plugs my cable modem into his computer he can assign us different port adresses then everything will be cool. The most obvious solution would be a router, but that would be expensive. We got a hub so thats not a problem.

how far off the mark are we..?

PS anyone know if NTL will bitch at us for doin this

i use an old PC (p166 although a lower spec one would do) with 2 NIC's to share the connection between a further 4 PC's (soon to be 5 when i get round to connecting my brothers IRC box up) without any hassle :)

This is using Win98SE and ICS that comes on the windows 98se disk :)

Basicly you'll need a machine with 2 network cards.
It could be one of your machines or a spare.
The advantage of a spare is that you could put it somewhere and always leave it on.
Just use some kind of connection sharing on the machine, be it ICS or for advanced users, WinRoute or similar.

u want a linux box mate ;-)

if you all want ip addresses u will need to buy them off your isp whoever that maybe and do clever stuff. if not then you just want to setup simple masquerading with portforwarding too

You certainly can with the linux kernel... dont think that the winroute pro/ics ones can though

but to a certain extent hogging is made difficulte anyway and it probably isnt worth the effort really of setting up some kinda fair queuing system
