DoD uses the Half-Life engine, so if you can run Half-Life, you can run DoD.
DoD can be played over a LAN network or over the internet just like Half-Life.
It is multiplayer only.

Half Life actually does not need a high spec computer. I believe a CPU over 200Mhz can run it, and can be ran on 8mb Graphx. I would say you need around 1.5gb for HL and it's mods. Mine is actually 2.4Gb but I have alot of HL mods:) I run a GeForce 2 32mb and the graphx are fine.
Most HL mods are net/lan play only (i.e. TFC/CS and DOD) but you can get bots for them, so you can play by yourself. I would check here (http://bots.counter-strike.net) you will find some CS bots. There have also been rumours recently inside the dod community that their may be a single playerd soon, but that might just be gossip.
