looking to do a one off LAN due to cheap hire of a hall.
about 20 peps coming
all i got is a 4 way hub :) and lots of RJ 45
Anyone point me in the right direction?
switches
routers
all in ones etc and basically the set up.
thinking of one main server then hub/router/switch then all other connect.

a simple 24-port hub should be enough for 20 people. A switch may be better but will cost more.
Make sure they are 10/100 hubs/switches as people tend not to all run at 100baseT from my experience.

just as i thought thanks ;)

you don't want hubs whatever. Advice would be to test the water, you never know, some people *DO* have 24 port switches they can take with them. Only downer being you screwed if they don't turn up, your buggered

You really dont wanna use hubs for anything more than 8 people MAX. But given that you can buy an 8-port 10/100 switch for less than £45 why buy hubs at all?
You could make a 1 off purchase of a 24 port switch, but that will knock you back about £500 for a reasonable one. You could try linking several smaller switches like 3x8 ports, but I dont know what the performance would be like, and it doesn't have much scope for expansion.

nothing wrong with 24-port hub if its mainly lan/game traffic. the usage shouldnt be too high for 24-people. There were 20 admins on a 10base2 stretch of yellow string where i worked and it was perfectly usable still ;) they were shoving entire oracle db's around.
switches would be better as per usual though.
how about a stacked arrangement of a central switch and sub-hubs?

Hubs are fine, as long as its just gaming, the minutes someone starts leeching, no matter what it is. you'll end up with fairly high ping.

plan is use a 4 8 or 16 switch with sub hubs hold 4 in each if that makes sense, switcg#h will then send to hub and only block up local hubs and keeps down price ;)

I would either go for 2 * 16 ports or 3 * 8 ports the only thing about 3 * 8 ports not sure what the linking of them will be like........ I think it should be fine but never tried it....
The problem I see is if someone sends something to big to someone else on a different switch then all the bandwidth over the uplink will go!

Of course, that wouldn't be any different if it was an uplink of a 16 or 24 port switch.

True but 24 port should mean less uplink traffic... should....

The only ideal solution is everybody on the same port, but hell, nothings ever perfect. At the end of the day, even with 3 daisy chained 8 ports, you'll be ok if you keep it to just games, hell, a hub would do the job.

True......
but one thing I have to wonder?
ideal solution is everybody on the same port
Nice :D
