I work very closely next to a industrial x-ray machine at work - zapping all the parcels that are going onto a plane.
This thing has heavy rubber things at either end where the parcels enter and exit - now of course at certain points, you can see into the machine as a parcel exits when it pushes up the rubber things.

I'm not gonna get cancer am i? :awesome:

Not unless you stick your head in it every day, no.

You could end up infertile tho.

Those thick rubber things should probably be lined with a metal mesh inside as well to mitigate as much of the radiation exposure as possible

Also the scanners are probably very directional (except when they reflect of parcels) so again mitigated.

Frankly I think you'll be fine until your first 2 headed child is born!

Heron did you ever play Fallout?

"Your feet are itching since you walked over that radioactive goo..."
few days later
"The itching in your left foot is getting worse..."
few days later
"You have grown a 6th toe on your left foot and the itching has stopped."

I didn't think the xray scanner was consistently on? I would have guessed there is a mechinism that stops transmitting the xrays when the rubber flaps are not straight down.

Do not attempt to turn yourself into the Hulk by exposing yourself to xrays.

That was Fallout 2, and for the ultimate in sickening, you could get your extra toe removed and it became a consumable item in your inventory.

Mmm... mutant toe.

Are there any dosimetry devices on/in the machine or do you have personal dosimetry? TBH, xray levels for operators should be very low. The xrays emitted are very directional.

The wavelength is probably far too short to escape the machine anyway even if the rubber flaps were open.

For the purpose of the quote the # of Fallout was irrelevant, but yes it was fallout 2 :)
