i am on BTO...... which might sound bad , but they have just upgraded the server that i connect to .. which means that i get a nice l33t ping.
thing is...
i have a server that is running as a server... i.e its the gateway which i connect my PCs through... via a hub.
If i want to DCC someone something over IRC i cant do it off my machine which is connected to the server.. i have to upload the file to the server and then DCC it using IRC on my server...
is there any way round this??
i am using MS ICS btw.... someone suggested using SYgate or something.... but i dunno how to set the bugger up... and is it any good?

yeah with ICS I am also certain (although I don't use it) that you can't.
Get winroute or SYgate. I use winroute and that works fine you can get it form
www.tinysoftware.com
It gives you a lot of option like downloading you're mail , firewall (packet filtering, nat) it will let you use ICQ, irc and just about everything else. And best of all it is free!

i think monk may have the answer then...... but..
i dunno how to set up either of these 2 progs...
coz on thursday night i am having 5 people over my h00se for a mini lan before we drive to n00bury
and if they wanna get files from people of the net on IRC i dont wanna have to keep visiting the server computer in the other room and powering it up to a screen and ****e.. coz its annoying

If you dont want to have to work out how to set it up, why dont you download the 30 day trial of Radmin from www.radmin.com and use it to remote control your server pc?

Or you could just use smoothwall if the machine is dedicated - supports adsl no probs.

BT "Do not prevent you doing this, however they don't support it" was the official line i remeber.
MONK
24th November 2001, 16:33
You are not allowed to have multplay people connecting!
But BT don't check unless you use lots and lots of bandwidth!
And there isn't anyway they could stop you without checking first.
m00
24th November 2001, 17:17
But you can't use any more bandwidth with a LAN than with just a single machine anyway?
zhardoum
24th November 2001, 23:33
not true, depending on the bandwidth the one machine connects at... not many people use full bandwidth 24/7, even when they think they do, it depends on where they connect to, usually the bandwidth is only 24% used, if its at, or near to 100% 24/7 eyebrows will be raised

I'm assuming that you mean multiplul. Acutally, i asked bT about using it over a network before i signed up and they said it was fine, but they didn't support it.
MONK

Yes!
No one from multiplay is allowed to connect :D
Kewl they first said only one machine was allowed to be connected at least you can't get chucked off now...WK :D

BTi was the same arrangement as BTo AKAIK, when i joined BTi about 2 years ago, they said it was fine, when i switched to BTo, they said it was ok

I think this may be what your looking for :)
It is a page with downloadable port mappings for ICS that you just import..... and it has ones for IRC DCC - which is what you were asking for.....
GL with it... hope it helps :)

Wishy. BTo/BTi have been lying to you. The operator may have said it was fine to share your insternet connection, but id you check the terms and conditions that you have signed, then you'll find that its not. I know, I have read them.
Saying that tho, I doubt they would care much unless you are becomming a bandwidth hog as Zhardoum was talking about.

LOL well the bt engineer installed an adsl modem onto a server machine in my garage no questions asked, even when I asked him to confirm it was OK he said it was fine

They had no problems taking the line to my server box. And i check the conditions and i don't remeber seeing anything.

Dont force me to physicly hurt you next time I see you. :p:
Tell ya wot. I'll read through the terms and conditions again and quote you clause and paragraph where it says you cant. Hows that?

/me just had a thought.
Of course this is the point where you turn around and tell me you have the business product. If you do, lets just say you shall be deserving of my close personal attention at the next event.

Well, i found a new computer mag while looking for the T's and C's
The only 2 Parragraphs i can see which apply are 11.2 and 11.3
11.2
"We may make availbile to you software that enables you to use the service. You must not copy or modify this. It is important that you only access the service through this software or in alrternative ways permitted by us"
11.3
"When we provide you with the service it, and any associated software, is intended for your use only. Therefore you must not re-sell, transfere, assign or sub licence the service (Or any part of it) to anyone else"
Well, we use their software to dial and then route it, i can't see a problem with that. And Its only us that use it, not any third party.
All a bit vaigue to remove people from the service for anyway.

Sharing Internet connections is so easy with CM :)

DAMN!
DAMN, DAMN, DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!
Very well, I shall concede this point. I looked and couldn't find it either. I swear I saw it somwhere, just doesn't appear to be there now.
The closest I found was in the AUPs about not sharing logon details.

You will find that the ICS you use probably knows about IRC ports so can set it up.
What it does not know is how to handle DCC connections.
What I do with my setup (a DSL router) is that I have it assume that all connections that are new or unkown should be routed to my main home PC.. so new TCP/IP PORTS are always routed to my machine... After I did this all things like DDC, some games and ICQ file sending now work.
So essentialy you need a firewall/routing proggy that must be told to route traffic to your PC
And for you T&Cs I only have 1 PC connected to the Router, but it still needed to be told where to send data to.

Well, my router i just send on the ports i want to the machine i want, works better, you at least have to know what your forwarding. But i could just forward the lot to my machine, its just a silly thing to do really.
