1) Is the PS3 blu-ray drive region free for games AND movies?
2) If not, is there a way to make it region free?
I don't know if this violates forum rules, cause I don't know if this is illegal :S
If so, please answer question 1 and ignore question 2.

Games are region free. BDs are not region free.

1) No, the bluray drive in a PS3 is locked to the region it is meant to be sold in.
e.g. A for Americas & Japan, B for Europe & Africa, C for the rest
The good news is that all games and a MAJORITY (>50%) of films are will play on EU/UK players. More recent films and certain studios might have region coding. I was looking at getting Sunshine on bluray and ALMOST bought it from Movietyme. Good job I didn't because Fox films are region locked and don't play on out of region players. Getting it from a UK retailer was £5 dearer but will play on a UK PS3.
Here's a site that claims to list a number of films based on region coding.

I know it is an IP address... it isn't a scam. I've hopefully been on the forum long enough for you to trust me on this. :)
2) There is no way to make the PS3 region free at this time. Sony have complete control over the firmware for the PS3 so it isn't as if you could get a hacked firmware and apply it. The next software update to come along would probably overwrite the firmware you used.
THAT SAID, if you install Linux on a PS3 then you are in a better position to tinker with playback options because you're messing around with your own SOFTWARE and not the hardware. DeCSS is well known for decrypting region locked DVDs in Linux for playback, maybe there'll be something similar for bluray in the future. Who knows?

One of the cheapest places is movietyme.
Free UK Delivery and they have a list of all the 200 odd region free bluray films to buy, at impressive prices. Just got a copy of The Fifth Element on blu ray for 9.99. Woop!

Like I said, be double sure about what you're buying from Movietyme. I only noticed the one I was buying was a Fox film on region A AFTER I ordered. By cancelling, I'm going to get my refund minus 70p cancellation fee.
