View Full Version : Temperature Control i34

On the second floor in Newbury i33 the ambient temperature was 30C+ at points and as low as 12C at other times. Not only was it quite uncomfortable to sit in it was a pain in the arse for most of the hardware my CPU was throttling all over the place and my graphics card was seriously hot and I am now having to RMA it as it’s dead. That’s basically £300 of GFX dead after LAN.
At i34 all the machines will be on the same level, I have noticed that there are a few big doors for getting stuff into and out off the hall, would it be possible to have some portable air conditioning units dumping cold air into the roof space to keep the ambient temperature close to about 20C.
With the average PC putting out ~650W and a human about another 100W were looking at about 750W of heat per person. This converts to about 2559 BTU per person you can get rid of most of that heat thorough the roof and doors if your clever meaning about 30+ 20,000 BTU portable units should keep it bearable. ** I'm probably wrong on the maths I spent 10 minutes on it to help illustrate my point so dont flame **

four words,
Universal serial bus FAN.
and with a ambient temp of even 30c a £300 gfx card shouldnt get near the heat to die or even start to warp the PCB, unless badly overclocked.

Thats 4 words USB is an acronym not a word, I'm not talking about moving heat about I'm talking about keeping the ambiant temp of the hall down so people/hardware dont die!

meaning the temp around the pc being at 30c wont make a GFX die even if its running at 70c.

One of my mates had two case fans setup either side of his monitor... :)

ez64 You Sir are a Clueless Thick Troll. My concern is clearly stated 30+ and thats room tempeture. The changes in ambiant temp and the fact that @ i33 it was blooody frEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEzing outside i34 it's gonna be mid summer with 2000 machines in the same room do the maths.

This was mentioned at the launch presentation in the marquee. There has never been a heat problem on the floor of the grandstand due to the high ceiling, the roof at Stoneleigh is much much higher so heat shouldn't be a problem.

You might need to knock down the stoneleigh lodge hotel and the other 500 bedrooms to fit enough air conditioners in...

See ez64 it's not hard to be a human dan managed it :)
It's still an awfull lot of heat and most of it will indeed go into the roof and some out of those nice gert big doors. I just think with all the extra people on the same floor they should invest in some extra cooling :)
Oh and another thing they never mentioned in the presentation was that the roof on the grandstand dont catch the sun, where as the roof of this building is the absolut top (IE the potential to increase the temp inside).

To bassicly blame multiplay for a dead graphics card for a indoor temp of 30-35c is beyond luncay, this is why I took my bad tone from the start.

Top temp was 38C low temp within mins was 12C and those are only the ones I noticed, I tell you what I'll stick you in a hot room then outside then a hot room then outside etc etc etc and we will see how you bear up. SHUT UP please as that was not my point, my point is more of an effort needs to be made to control temp at i34.
PS its "lunacy" and I'm a lunatic FYI :) Also I never sat at my desk watching temps all weekend so hush they are just what I noticed.

your graphics card wouldnt have died from the heat due to a) thermal throttling or b) it just turning off
Tbh, my gpu and cpu didnt go above 30C load whole event even when it was melting in concourse.

The room doesnt go from A. 30c to B.12c in a matter of seconds making your point completly invalid.

Neither would have an ambient of 30 killed any hardware unless he's got no airflow in his case and is trying to passively cool and overclocked beast.

Please stop talking! I was sat right next to a door on the second floor it was ~0C outside, Someone pops out for a ciggy in comes the cold air out goes the warm, the curtain heater was also on this made stuff hotter.
/Waits for you to tell me people don't smoke on the balcony on the second floor now in the most misspelt way. And call me wrong for an event you were not even at.

Yes, and that instantly drops the ambient temp of the whole floor by 12°C..

Just has to be the bit I'm in does it not?
PS you TROLL! It's not about my card that's being replaced, as it's under warranty. Clearly it's the bit of maths that the hall being full of an equivalent of 14,000 people in the middle of summer that has escaped you.

Troll! That's what you are when your not correcting me, just flaming me. My hardware/i33 was an example. i34 and the amount of heat 2000 people on one floor will make is my point!

Blaming multiplay for a dead gfx card because of the temp is insane, W-17 i34.

In all fairness, it was snowing outside at DH winter, yet in the hall we were wearing shorts and T-Shirt.

Gaming laptop. I didn't have a problem at i33 either. Now i15... that was a bit toasty on the 2nd floor.
