View Full Version : TF2 tournement - Clan interest test

AcidReniX
27th March 2008, 03:25
This is just a small test of mine in an attempt to plan an epic TF2 tournement at i34. This is all theoretical and there is no word of sponsorship or anything for a TF2 tournement at this time, but let's just do a small test here...

IF the TF2 tournement had a prize fund of say... £3000, would your clan attend the event?

The idea behind this post, is if we can get enough clans from the UK and maybe across Europe to commit to saying they will attend the event (if there is a decent prize fund)... a decent prize fund might be posible (sponsors would be more interested).

So now, reply with your clan name / any other information if you would realistically attend a UK LAN with a prize fund of 3k. If not, what would the prize fund need to be before you would consider attending (again, be realistic).

I'll start with a clan list of teams I'm pretty certain would attend reguardless, and see if we can build on that. Ideally i'd say at least 32 teams would be a good start to this idea.

You can add a reply here or PM me on Quakenet IRC (TLR|Arx) when I'm online obviously.

Clan List:
Team count: 13
TLR - The last resort
WotR - Weapons of the Rebellion
St*rs - Celebrity gaming with new aliases.
Anim - Animate Gaming
4K - 4Kings *(maybe TUP only, not sure)
Sir - Knights
Fracture - Clan Fracture *(Turn up and play only)
No Daddy! - No Daddy Not The Cupboard!
[SAS] - SAS
CantFitMyN - Cant Fit My Name In
HwA - HwA - *(Turn up and play only)
Jolt - Jolt admins
CiMH - Censored in my hair
...

Im fairly sure you'd get 4K attending aswell, youre gonna have to spread this far and wide though as i doubt many of the decent tf2 teams are going to be keeping an eye on this forum...

I really hope to see my lads at i34 taking part. Animate Gaming will be attending for sure in other games also. But lets hope this TF2 tourney takes off!

Whilst on this subject, any possibility of MPUK getting some sponsorship from Valve at all, or if they can offer some sort of LAN event support? I'm sure it would be cool to have someone from valve at i34 :)

AcidReniX
27th March 2008, 12:49
I believe valve won't sponsor a LAN personally because of some bias issues (if they sponsor one they feel they have to sponsor them all) or something like that, but what i think valve do is if people approach them for sponsorship, they speak to their affiliates to try to get something for the event, rather than them doing it personally.

Thats pretty much spot on, Rikki has more details of that situation but maybe with some advance warning we could arrange something before the signups close for i34 ;) gogo email gabe!

Alot more 'top' clans should be attending i34. Meaning for a better final and tournament overall. Looking w/ it.

TomM
27th March 2008, 16:50
top clans will attend - unless you do something crazy like - sellout an event with a low prize fund and THEN get a big pool after the tickets have gone ;)

lol where did you get 15,000 from :D

Towneh
28th March 2008, 13:35
He's talking about "LAN traffic", potentially you can have upto 15k people who pass through the stands throughout the weekend as the events get more "exhibition" orientated.

Wlv
28th March 2008, 17:52
Exactly what Towneh said, whilst there are only 2k BYOC spaces, it said quite clearly on the i34 vid and on the site that the expected "traffic" will be huge!

Not sure how many TUP spaces are avail too, baring in mind, the majority of the "big name" tf2 teams are based around europe..

AcidReniX

[SAS] have 6 TF2 players signed up and paid. That will be at least double by the event

The Jolt admins are on our way. I'm leading the advance guard of signing up and paying but they all assure me they will be signing up soon. So put Jolt down - i'm certain I can get them into a team for a tourney. Course we'll lose badly, but then we'll use admin powers to slay everyone else.....

The rate at which the seats are selling, I seriously doubt there will be many big name teams coming over from other countries to play. :( Unless the comp gets announced like soon :P

AcidReniX
14th April 2008, 18:38
Yea, i'm pretty much scrapping this thread, because if anything does happen, it will be the same situation as the last event. A sponsor might jump in but only after the event has sold out so none of the big teams will be able to attend anyway.

Neither is a tournament fun when there are only 2-3 teams in it that play to a high level, when you know the top3 before it starts its a bit boring ;)

Alot of high teams have clarified or discussed about coming if a tournament with a sufficient prize fund is announced. :]

Anim
15th April 2008, 17:34
yes as was done the time before, its not a new thing for that to happen...

AcidReniX
15th April 2008, 18:10
A tournament doesn't need sponsors/prizes to be fun...

It's not even about the prizes. For example, if the top teams from Europe did come, our team wouldn't win anything, so surely if it was all about the prizes, I wouldn't be pushing for more high skill teams to attend lol.

The point is, we want to play some competitive matches, against teams of our skill level or above. Imagine you are an under 21's football team playing against an 8 year old school team. Do you think it will be fun for either team? Sure it might have fun moments, but it doesn't have the potential for a great (fun) game as a really even one.

In order for a lot of teams to attend, there has to be some kind of prize fund, because it costs teams from Europe a lot more to attend and they would at least want a chance at winning some of that back.

PussyHunter
17th April 2008, 10:08
Even if none of the 'top' clans make it, it still looks as though you've got enough interest for a fairly competetive tournament.

As you say, your clan wants opponents better than you to compete with, but the same can be said for my clan & probably most others.

It may turn out that your lot r4pe everyone in site, but you wont know for sure until it happens...

Anim
17th April 2008, 10:21
The point is a couple of the teams entering ARE within the group of top teams in europe, with more of a confirmation on prizes the rest would come along too and all of a sudden you have a tournament where you dont know who's going to be in the final before the tournament even starts.

I can fully assure you that unless you spend the next 2-3 months playing against 4k syre tlr etc etc you will be destroyed at LAN.

PussyHunter
17th April 2008, 13:57
Some of us still play games for fun, & don't actually care if we win/lose/get destroyed.

Fact remains there is enough interest to get a tourney going.

If we have a good one then maybe potential sponsors will sit up & take notice & we'll see something at i35...

Wlv
21st April 2008, 11:48
Hey PussyHunty :) Nice to see more TFC names coming along :D. Not sure if we will be sat in the BYOC area or not yet, but either way, you owe me a beer :)

On a second note, the main reason I personally want more "Big Name" teams to come along to the competition, isn't soley on the games from my player perspective, but more to push the game out there to other competitions.

i.e if you watch the final vs CG and someone else, dispite it being funny, there was no serious competition. In the i33 final, that was slightly more interesting to watch, but it still wasn't the top 2 teams in europe fighting it out....

I feel tf2 certainly deserves a spot up there with CSS / CoD4 in terms of lanning. But hey, who knows? With cdc5 picking the game up, more might follow :)

There is no TUP ast I34, just the ELITE section. TF2 teams need to look at the PC Gamer LAN which is later in September ran by Multiplay which has £15,000 as prize fund.
