Hey guys, how do you connect your PS3 to PC to stream things?

I have gone into my network and it isn't detecting the PS3. I go on the PS3 and search for media devices and it doesn't detect my PC. Is there something i'm missing?

Connected to the internet through my router, both PC and PS3 hooked up to ports on the router through ethernet cables.

The PS3 can agme online and surf the net fine. So it isn't a connection problem. More of a communication problem.

Any fixes or advice?

It's easy..

1. install windows media player 11 on your PC.
2. turn on your PC & PS3
3. Fire up media player 11, make sure you've got some videos in the library
4. In WMP 11, find the video sharing option, select it, it will list an "unknown" device, that will be your PS3. Allow the video sharing.
5. You should now be able to view video's on your PS3.

I find WMP11 streaming to be highly unreliable. If you want a decent streaming service, use TVersity.

It's faster, more reliable, simpler to use and has built in systems like transcoding, so if your videos are in a format not supported by the PS3 (like xvid), tversity will encode them in real time as it plays so the ps3 can play it. Not massively processor demanding either suprisingly. Also TVersity has bandwidth control so if it thinks it wont keep up with your bandwidth, it'll jiggle the bitrate on the fly so that your videos wont skip or have to pause for buffering.

I have mine set up on my old AMD64 machine as a file server, and the PS3 streams happily off that over 54g wireless just like watching a DVD.

I set up TVersity this evening and got the PS3 playing 95% of my videos without a problem. Just remember that your PC is doing the grunt work of transcoding the video for the PS3 so if you're trying to fling around Full HD videos (1080i/p), you need a beast of a machine.

I followed the destructions in this thread on PS3forums.com...

I've got more tweaking to do, but I'm confident I'll get all my vids playing.

Yeah thats true, if you've got HD res videos then you need a decent processor. Saying that most of what I stream are bog standard standard def widescreen xvid files, so the single core AMD64 in my server handles it fine. I'm sure any dual core could handle transcoding Full HD stuff as long as thats all it was doing. Quad cores dont even break a sweat.

Hi,
Excuse me for being a bit stupid, but do I need to get a wireles router to stream content from my pc to my ps3 or can I just buy a network adapter dongle? I currently have my pc connected to my Virgin modem via an ethernet cable.

I realise I will need a wireless router to connect my ps3 to the internet without cables, but how does the pc send info to the ps3? Does it do it direct (as in if I buy a dongle) or will it route to the ps3 via the modem?

Please help!

No nasty comments please, I am a newbie!

The PC sends the stream to your wireless router which then sends it on to your PS3. Just be sure you have a good strong signal to make sure that you get a constant stream.
Alternatively you can use a cat5 cable. Your choice. :)
