Me and My mate both got Broadband from NTL but we want to set up a direct connection, ie(type in ip address and transfer files as if we were on a network) but what i have gathered is that we can't because were on different Subnet masks or something like that any help will be appreciated

I presume you and your friend live at Different address's.

Here is what it is... I usually charge for this you know..

Your house is IP xxx.xxx.xxx

Your mate is YYY.YYY.YYY.

You connect to the net and so does your mate.

XXX.XXX.XXX -------> NET <---- YYY.YYY.YYY

What you need is 1 of 2 options.

VPN -> Virtual private network, to mask XXX straight to YYY using the net so YYY appears on your network,

or

Setup FTP servers on each area, map NAT across, and then password protect your ftp servers.

That way you can access each others machines from anywhere in the world, upload and download protected via password.

Go the VPN route, harder to setup, but more secure.

The choice is yours..

That depends on your machines, what OS's you use and what programs you have available and how much cash you want to part with.

Win 2k supports VPN built in, but it isnt very good. FTP server seoftware is cheap and easy to get, and I believe PC anywhere 10 supports VPN's as well

but thats what you need to know..

Also, I hope you know NAT and can access your router config to allow static ip address translation.. cos you will need to know your IP address's internal and external.

Strewth, you could even map hosts and services and add a ROUTE command in the command line..
