I bought WoW months ago, but my mums death put me off for some time, I just downloaded the demo version just to take a peek before running the disc.

First, I am looking at guildwars as well, most poular game is WoW, why is that ? Why would a subscription free game not be so popular, must be a good reason im sure :) - since its free i could do WoW and guild wars, but thats just daft, need to stick to one.

Secondly, if I decide to make a start on WoW properly, then obviously im in the uk, I enjoy RPG's alot - oblivion to Enchanted Arms, I also still have a phantasy star universe account but ive not touched that for months and likely going to cancel it for a number of reasons. But, Im happy going solo, dont mind teaming up, not a competative person, looking to play casualy - have fun, enjoy every asspect of the game as far as is possible - where do i go ? what realm ? where is a good place to take my character for normal RPG'ing MMO style ?

I did try posting this on the official site but i think because i only have a 10 day trial account it wont let me post, so hoping I'll get some good replys here to help sway my mind on the above matters.

Many thanks in advance ! :)

There are 3 types of realms: Normal, PVP (Player Vs Player), RP (Roleplay) and PVPRP (Player Vs Player Roleplay). Each has different game policies.

Just to broaden your horizons you may wish to look at EVE too.

YARR!

Wow is extremely easy to get into but rarely feels like you're actually achieving anything imo. Plus you feel disconnected from the fight, I'm waiting for a hacky slashy mmo that actually feels like you're in the thick of it :) Until then it's sweating as my spaceship goes into structure and dieing actually means something :P

The reason WoW is more popular than Guild Wars is the fact that there's just so much more to do in Wow than GW. Also WoW gets updated very frequently with new content and I'm not sure about GW but since it's subscription free they aren't as pressured to bring out extra content as they do in WoW.

I'm starting to get the impression Ryvita is secretly employed by EVE.

Hmm, I wonder how much flaming we'd get if we advertised WoW in every other Eve thread. I guess we're just more tolerant of lesser MMOs.

OT: Most of the guys here are on Al'Akir, but if you're looking for in character roleplaying, as in actually speaking and acting in character, you might want a RP (roleplaying realm).

I'd also suggest selecting a PVP realm (where you can attack and be attacked in contested zones). It's a lot more fun than PvE realms and should you ever want to transfer to a PVP realm, you can only do it from other PVP realms.

In terms of playing, use your trial account to get a feel for the game. Give all the classes/factions a go and see what you enjoy the most. There's no limit to how many characters you can have (well OK you can only have 9 per realm), so give them all a try.

I'd personally pick WoW over GW - GW "instances" a lot of its content, so you're really only fully MMO when in towns and a few areas. Plus with 9 million other users, you're rarely short of other people to go questing with :)

The guy is open to other mmo's it was a valid shout :p

On the wow subject though, definitely join a pvp realm, you will regret it end game if you don't. I've also played GW's and the whole instanced thing wasn't for me, WoW is far superior in it's social structure and ease of entry.

WoW is my favourite mmorpg so far (Ive played the a lot of major mmo releases) because of its accessibility, relatively quick levelling, and the amount of people online - its pretty easy to find people to help out with whatever you need if you are tired of soloing.

Also, because there are a lot of people playing who dont usually play MMORPGs, you get a nice broad range of people to talk to - although there are still an awful lot of 12 year old L337 HAXX0R5, I R00L U N00B! But then, thats what /ignore is for!

In short ( wrote to much lol ) to save time Im wondering:

- PvP Vs PvE: Im an adventuring type, but can see the apeal of PvP, what do you lose from PvE in PvP ? IE, less quests in PvP for example but more challenge for example, what else ?

- What servers are good for getting in to the game and keeping it ongoing for some time ? I dont remember which one im on with the trial, went with a recomended PvE one. But should i go for one with more population, or a quieter one ? Id prefer freindly places as Im under alot of stress&hate mega flamers&keyboard worriors, i really do, cause id never do that to someone else, hope that makes sense.

- what about guilds and clans and stuff, silly thing or better to find one to start with ? any recomendations ? Should I start my own ?

- Any other thoughts/recomendations at all ? places to see, races, types, hardware IE keyboards etc, Im still getting used to the interface.

The long worded version:

MMmmm, thank you all for your responses, much appreciated ! I cant remember what realm im in, just went with a recomended PvE as im an adventurer, but I can see the appeal of PvP ( watched a couple of dwarfs fight it out for fun, very entertaining ! ), As I say, played PSU on the 360 for about a year, but security is becoming a problem even though they just introduced online GM's, my wife had a whole ton of stuff stolen from her room, but then she is in with the wrong crowd on it anyway. Add that to it just...reach level cap after same mission over and over, cap goes up, more maps, do them over and over, cap..... mmmm I have AOI as well, but as i thought, not really worth it in the long run for me.

Anyway, Guildwars ( cant really tell cause cant play a trial of course ) looks similar to WoW, but the numbers playing WoW is significant enough to beleive that its the favourable option. I'll try some youtube vids to see guildwars in action at least. Eve, well....I thought id like it, but as i say, I like to adventure - if you could leave the ship and explore ( which is a tall order I know ) id be sold, but I have to narrow the choices down for now, but ill keep an eye on it.

Im still paying £6.99 a month for PSU and not even thought about it for at least 5 months, so either I stop paying that amount or I put it to WoW or something similar and try a different game, hoping it wont lead me to getting fed up. I think PSU also doesnt keep you sustained when solo, I had some good groups to play with which was great, but when there was no team, got boring. Hoping that WoW is not so much like that, and I already feel its not, quests are always there, run off, die infront of some other players and laugh over it ( starting at level 1 lol ).

I have so far tried a night elf worrior and a human warlock - both fairly obvious choices, diliberate of course. BUT, Im in for PvE I think, is PvP close to PvE but you have the added challenge of attacking others or being attacked, or do you loose alot of the quests and things ?

If I go WoW and take to it enough I'll get all the expansions and get stuck in as time permits. Thanks again, think ill re-list some questions at the top though as I've writen loads and dont want people having to go through my waffle if they would rather not. :)

Actually most of the Eve converts played WoW for a good time together across 2 different realms, and while I really enjoyed WoW, I really like Eve and the sense of danger that exists in areas of the game.

Imagine being ganked in WoW in your best setup, your body is stripped of whatever survives the fight, you are reincarnated back at your own town somewhere, dressed in a loincloth, and with 1g from Blizzard for ****s and giggles. That's what being ganked in Eve is basically about, the effects are far worse, and therefore actually killing someone's ship is big stuff.

PvP servers are identical to PvE servers in every way, except that once you are out of the starting zones the other side (alliance / horde) can attack you at any point (and conversly you can attack any of them). On a PvE server you have to be flagged as PvP in order to be able to attack / be attacked by other players. All the PvE content is available on both.

Theres not a huge amount of solo content once you reach the level cap, your pretty much limited to the PvP battlegrounds at that point. That will likely take a large amount of time though, and you can always level another class if you really don't want to group up.

Well, it depends how long he wants to play, and if he gets into a decent raiding guild - the level 70 raid dungeons are plentiful, and to get to the point where you are attuned for them all will take ages - plus theres the new expansion forthcoming. I suppose it all depends how much time he wants to invest.
