ok my mrs bought me cod4 for xmas and ive had a little go on multi play but iam rubbish as i get killed straight away or just run and hide.
could someone tell me how i can play against other gamers at the same level as me (rubbish)

ummm pretty much you can't unfortunately there is no match making service ala halo

Practice would be a good idea and to play on small servers say 5 a side would help you to develop

Hi mate

I recommend first getting a config( buttons on keyboard and mouse) your happy with. Making sure your confortable with sprint and nades and lean etc.

Your best playing TDM gametype. Team deathmatch.
there is no task/objective in this gametype except killing the other team. Maybe find a server that only plays one map, one thats says crash 24/7 or sumthing. that way you'll learn one map and get used to where to hide

Pick one gun your happy with and stick with that.
Also if the server has killcam on, watch how you died and how the player who shot was playing. Also there is nothing wrong with joining a server and going into spectator(not joining a team) and just watching how people throw nades, or go prone when shooting etc

try these simple things and then let me know how you get on.

You're a lucky one. I can't even get CoD4 to install (I think it's a conflict between the CD copy protection and the write capability of the drive).
I would personally class you as a newb as opposed to a noob. The first is a stage almost everyone goes through with almost every game (short for newbie), whereas, the latter is a dire insult. Though, noob is often used to mean newb.
I would personally advise you to look for servers with newb, noob or training in the title. You will often be playing with and against players of a similar level.
