View Full Version : Next Gen Console War...

If microsoft are not careful I think they are going to lose the next gen war to the PS3*. Every day Sony seem to be adding features to the PS3 which make it more appealing over an Xbox 360. So Far..
1. Blu-Ray player.. Yes, unless HDDVD pulls some sorta rabbit out of their hat, the Blu-Ray discs are going to be the HD disc choice of the future.
2. Play Three (http://www.playthree.net/2007/12/playstation-3-playtv-gets-uk-price.html) .. A set top box for the PS3, to recieve digitial TV signal, record Digital TV, playback digital TV. Think Sky+(HD) box for the PS3.
The way it is going the PS3 might be the "all in one" box, that sits under your TV instead of a multitude of different boxes.
I cannot help to think, Microsoft has missed the boat, and should of put the HD-DVD drive into the xbox 360 from day one. Sure they are soon to offer BT Vision on the Xbox 360 (subject to being on a BT Broadband contract, tsk!) it just seems too little too late.
I love my xbox, it's a great console, but I'm getting tempted more and more to push all the boxes aside and replace them with the PS3. :/
*I'm not talking about the Wii, becuase it is a "pure" games console. ;)

Thanks ez, once again your awesome contribution to a thread has made me lose a little more faith in humanity.
IMO the console war is all about the games, which the 360 has the edge on at the mo. Whether the 360 can keep hold onto this advantage though is tricky with the PS3 scheduled to get some make or break titles in the near future.

We need the Xbox 3, with a blue ray drive and graphics twice as good as anything around atm, plus some sort of IP TV and unrestricted media streaming. googogo MS, you can thank me later :D
PSN name = RichR34
Add me also been playing the burnout demo online which is cool. I will say I'm dissapointed in the PS3 though. I have a 360 as well and theres **** all good games out for the PS3. Even fewer that are out exlusivly on the PS3.
Games that are out on both seem to run like crap on the PS3. I was bored struggling to find a PS3 game worth buying and decided to get Need For speed prostreet. Holy crap what a pile of ****. horrible framerates and graphics less shiney than the 360.
Also despite setting my PS3 to 1080 when you launch a game on the PS3 it cheekily changes the screen mode to 720. I havn't found a single PS3 game which runs in 1080 yet, whereas most of my xbox games run fine in 1080.
Also the online stuff on PS3 is utter tripe compared to Xbox live. The 360 is the better console but I think the PS3 has more future potential if developers bother to put some effort in and make some decent games for it and if they tighten up the online stuff a bit!

Still i am unsure if the "box that does everything" option is best. its like the Iphone, yeah it can do all these things but not do them as well as something designed to do them. I just hate this stupid HD format war, they really should never have let this happen as all it has done is damaged things for the consumers. Hopefully one of them will "win" though, but studios signed with HD-DVD insist they will Only use it, so yeah :S

Got a PS3
Has a blueray player.
Got transformers on HD-DVD for xmas, boo i thought - luckily my mum could return it thinking I'll get it on blu ray.
Transformers is HD DVD Only. Fan ****ing tastic. Turns out a whole bunch of film companies will only release on one of the 2 formats for the foreseeable future. Only certain films will appear on both due to stupid deals with sony and holywood companies.
So if you want to watch high death films without worry you really need to get 2 players. ****ing idiots. **** off am I buying 2 ****ing machines that do exactly the same thing. I don't even care which one "wins" I just want the loser to die ASAP.
Well played for them not having the common sense to work together instead of creating 2 **** formats which do nothing but alienate users. No wonder most people don't give a **** about HD formats, yes its good and pretty but its just too much of a pain in the arse to consider until one of the formats dies a death.
Oh, and a HD-DVD or blu ray movie costs almost as much as an Xbox game.
Not impressed.

MS have partnered with BT to offer freeview services via the xbox, not sure if you can record them but it shows they are keeping up with Sony

ramblings follow
i always thought long term the x360 would have a tough time hanging on, and i wouldn't put it past MS to release and xbox3 early-ish and piss everyone off. although the ps3 was more expensive for early adopters, i see it lasting longer once more devs get their head around programming it. this is before you add issues like the current cost of making games and what it'll cost for next-gen (next-next-gen?) games, and if graphics really make much difference (there's someone in work who insists that if you had the same game on console and console+1, with the +1 looking better and costing more, he'd go for the +1 version every time. there's always someone who will throw money at them)
imo, they need a 360.5 with more ram, hard drive as default and a slightly more powerful cpu/gpu to make the whole experience better. less "loading..." pauses, games actually being rendered at full resolution, and in mass effect not having to reload the uniform of the person you're talking to each time the camera changes and it drops from memory. in all honesty i can't see them doing it (with the costs involved too) when there's money to be raked in from a whole new console. but then i don't run ms

i think the difference between the 2 console is that the 360 evolves slowly so it will have an intergrated HD drive and anything that is in a ps3 will end up on the 360
they are already making the xbox3 too where as the ps3 isnt being replaced for 12 years!!
anyone with both consoles will tell you they look EXACTLT the same. I got cod4 on them both adn they are totally alike.

Its Offical 'Xbox will host BT's TV service'
From the bbc News site linked Here (http://forums.multiplay.co.uk/showthread.php?p=703046#post703046)
BT is teaming up with Microsoft to offer its television service via the software giant's Xbox 360 console.
Boooooooooooo
To get the service, customers will have to first subscribe to BT broadband.

microsoft and BT. not on your life!!
when you say BT broadband what exactly does that mean ? unless you are a cable customer then you have BT wholesale broadband. or does that mean BT openworld broadband
it sounds to me like they are gonna ruin gaming for us all so they can get some dosh of m$
