Has anyone else had absolutly unnacceptable download rates from steam lately.

The two worst offenders are Call of Duty 2 and Flatout 2, but recently it has been the same on almost everything.

In the past three days I have downloaded almost nothing from steam despite having 3 games trying to download and install and then yesterday the Rockstar collection was added, most of that is just under 5%.

Im putting it down to my internet connection atm which has been absolutly assraped for the last three months with my computer having 2 reformats and reinstalls of everything from steam (its a big list)

I'm basically looking to confirm that it is my internet connection being throttled back, not Valves.

My connection is an up to 8meg Unlimited package from BT.

Im getting quite annoyed as I really want to play Manhunt from Steam and its stuck at 7% downloaded despite being sitting trying to download for almost 36 hours.

I had quite a long wait to download TF2 the other week after my reformat. When I bought it a month a so or go the speeds were fine, and it was done in a few hours, but it took about 12 hours to download it this time.

Just deleted half life 2 and am re-downloading it and getting 1.5MB/s. Ok it's not maxing out the connection, but it's close.

It seems then that it is my internet connection just being lame. I think its time for a new ISP with more leniant download limits.

This isnt the first time I have had this problem, but this is the worst it has ever been. Usually I find everything hovers around 250 - 300k while I am being throttled but never before have I failed to even get dial up speeds.

And also I guess my other large file downloads havnt helped the situation either.

Thanks for the replies though guys.

Its taken me until now to download half of the rockstar pack that i bought yesterday, so yeah, the downloads suck, its not just you. :(
Oh and ive been downloading it 24 hours a day since early yesterday.

shut down steam, then delete clientregistry.blob file from you steam folder.
When you restart steam the source download server will change.

There are a ton of steam download servers, and if you're on one that has too many people then your speeds suffer. So deleting that file means that you'll get assigned to a different server, hopefully one that has better speeds. If you still get **** speeds try try again :p

Thanks for the suggestion Swyft but it didnt work :(

I am pretty convinced its BT being cocks and killing the connection. To be fair though I have had a rather overly busy three months. Im usually pretty close to the limit anyway, add on three downloads of everything in my steam account (even before the Rockstar collection it alone is considerably larger than my monthly limit)

Its still a bit irritating though. I would be willing to pay quite substancially for a connection which low pings in games AND consistantly has the 8meg speed, and has download limits so large they are almost irrelevant. Such an ISP though does not exist as far as I know and even if it does it would almost certainly not be available here.

Pity.

Again, thanks for the replies folks.

Steam is very slow atm and its definatly not my connection that is the problem for me. Probably all those people getting stuff for christmas and downloading updates and stuff.

you pay the price, you'll get the service.
Obviously your speed is dependent on distance from exchange, line quality etc, but you can still get unlimited packages.
I know demon offer an unlimited package, but its a business package and therefore the cost is £40 a month without vat.

But as always you get what you pay for :p
