Woman Drivers eh ;)

At least blokes do it in style by getting pissed and then stopping half in the fast lane and half in the middle lane for a kip.

I don't get how people can be scared of the motorway, it's the easiest driving you do! If you're not 100% confident you just match the speed of the vehicle in front of you at a safe distance. Job done.

In the sun newspaper apparently the worst drivers recorded in the UK are mostly woman and homosexuals where they all have a space awareness issues

Nah, my mum is on the complete other end of the spectrum..

She drives to work at 7am on the motorway, and often does over 100+ mph :f

Can't see the video here. But the worst driver I have ever come across was a male. Presumably in his early 20s.
He was not a boy racer, far far from it.

He indicated right way way before a roundabout, driving so slowly that Mum thought they were turning into the Hospital about 300 yards prior to roundabout. Overly hesitant (i.e stopped and waited about 15 seconds) at previously mentioned roundabout (which was clear ages before and after he arrived at it) and then gave way to traffic ON THE LEFT at a mini roundabout, for about 3-4 mins (nothing crossed his path, he had right of way). We were sat behind him and eventually I got mum to beep him. His mates span round and I mouthed GO! They mouthed back, SHUT UP!. So I gave them the V. Bunch of long haired indie kids.

The bloke clearly was a learner, yet no L plates visible. Either that or there were multiple miracles happening when he passed his test.

Had I been driving, I would have beeped far sooner. Mum is just too kind. She doesn't like road rage. However in certain situations, a beep or 2 is totally neccessary

It is not the actual driving in a straight line on the motorway that I am scared of. It's the changing lanes, and joining the motorway that scares me. Both involve trying to move into a flowing stream of metal boxes (some of which are very large and scary), all travelling at approx. 70mph+, whilst simultaneously looking in a mirror and trying to ascertain what everything is doing in some messed up backwards fashion. Added to the mix that said metal boxes will kill you if you get your timing just a little bit wrong (kinda like space invaders but with actual death) and my total lack of actual driving ability, and this is a recipe for doom. It's like some hideous fairground ride that I can't get off.

Did I mention that I have a nervous disposition and don't drive well? :)

It's not hard at all and if you have a problem doing that then you shouldn't be driving at all, you are a danger to other road users, several times I've almost been knocked off my motorbike because of careless drivers.. If I can merge onto a busy motorway on a motorbike with no worries then anyone should be able to.

I saw this in the newspaper last week... if you've got a fear of motorways, or whatever, don't go on them. Even if you do need an ink cartridge.

The fact that she was driving half on the hard shoulder was reason enough to get her off the road, tbh.

The trick to that baronesss is to get upto 70mph on the slip road then the RELATIVE Speed of you vs the "metal boxes" is 0mph - a speed anyone can crash at and be fine - then all you have to do is concentrait on avoiding the bits of tarmac .. but usually they roll under the car :)

Seriously tho - she should have her licence removed. Game over - do not pass go. If you have such a fear of driving that you cannot use the road infrastructure of this country properly - go and live in a city and don't drive.

End of.

It is not a right, it is a privelige. You wouldn't try sailing around the coast if you were unable to sail?

This mind set is what causes issues in IT and Driving "everyone should be able to do it.. so why can't I/You"

WRONG - quite a lot of people can't and wont be able to do it - deal with it and figure out a way around.

Classic video.

Rippsy is totally right here, i've crashed on the motorway, when i had my escort. It was fairly soon after passing my test, and i was fairly confident. Moving onto the motorway i had accelerated up to 65-70mph, but the inside lane was moving very slowly. I checked over my shoulder and proceeded to move straight into the outer lane (it was part of the M3 with 2 lanes) but just behind my field of vision when i checked was a fast moving peugeot, she assumed i could see her and put her foot down to get ahead of me before i moved into the lane.

Don't get me wrong, it was my fault, but she didn't exactly help the situation. Moral of the story: Motorways are around 5x safer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_safety) than none-motorways.

If your not too happy/sure with driving on the motorways then get yourself behind a lorry and give yourself a very safe distance between you ( so the lorry can see you in their mirrors). Most drivers don't argue with lorries so you are in a fairly safe postion. I used to travel to Dover every weekend and always sat behind the same Sainsbury's lorry. You dont' get people trying to push you along if they think you aren't going fast enough either.

Thats fine till you are trying to get off and theres no gap cos a bunch of people are filling the slow lane cos they are too scared to drive properly.

For reasons of fuel economy, I've been driving at about 60mph on dual-carriageways/motorways lately (seen the price of fuel recently?!?!). I will however always fall back to the lowest lane at the earliest opportunity and always double check that my lane is clear before pulling out.

I've always believed that overly cautious drivers are a danger on roads, and this woman proved my point. I'd be saying the same thing if she was male, female or even martian. Women don't have the monopoly on bad driving. :)

A lot of people told me it was her fault, but since she was established in the lane, and i hit the side of her (not her hitting the back of me) regardless of whose "fault" it really was, on paper she would win every time.

Thats called the fast lane.. you know the darting between the idiots who don't know how to use the road properly to get to your destination quicker.. oh wait?

how is pulling out in front of a law-breaking, speeding motorist your fault? :can:

If you change road position into an oncomming or faster moving flow of traffic it is always your fault if you cause an accident regardless if the other party is breaking the law due to speeding because YOU caused the accident.

There speed may be a contributing factor, but if you hadn't pulled out it wouldn't have happened.

Anyone ever noticed drivers that can only just see over the steering wheel, surely they should be laws with certain cars that you have to be "" so high to be able to drive a certain car. Surely they can be dangerous drivers as they have poor vision of the road around them but I see it so often where the top of the steering wheel is level with their mouth or nose.

there should be more emphasis on driving in heavy fast moving traffic in driving lessons. theres no point passing someone out of pity that learned to drive down country lanes with a grand population of 0, then chucking them onto the M11

Seems to agree perfectly with your view, unless you believe pulling out in front of a faster moving vehicle without sufficient warning is acceptable?

We can rage all we like at horrendous driving practice but unless more police are actually put on the roads they're unlikely to be stopped. I feel that the outside lane hogs are actually dangerous as they encourage overtaking on the inside lane.

That said, any police on the roads are going to spend all their time stopping people driving perfectly safely but above the speed limit instead of those actually causing a problem.

RocketKnight
8th January 2008, 15:02
There's no need to undertake. Just pull right up behind the middle lane hog and hold down the horn until they move. ;)

I learnt to drive on country lanes in the middle of nowhere. And I didn't go on a motorway until about 3 months after my test, when I felt confident I wouldn't kill myself or others.

I now drive on motorways quite a lot, and tend to keep up with the speed of the rest of the traffic (so to speak...).

Sometimes it's just incompetence and a lack of any ability that causes people to be dangerous on the road.

What really annoys me more than anything are lorries overtaking other lorries at practically the same speed and causing huge tailbacks as all the faster traffic tries to get past them. I think they should be restricted to the slow lane on dual carriageways at least if not motorways.

Wouldn't cause any tailbacks if the cars overtaking said lorries went back into the left most lane AFTERWARDS instead of sitting in the outside lane to over take the car sitting in the middle land which is going to overtake lots of white lines and no actual traffic.

Strych
9th January 2008, 19:08
No. When there is any significant traffic flow, slow lorry moving into fast-moving stream of traffic = slowing of traffic stream = tailbacks.

This effect can also be observed when people doing 25mph (I kid you not) suddenly move into the middle lane of the A3.

Saw this happen on a freaking dual carriageway! One arty truck trying to overtake another, took him about 6-7 miles to do so moving at like 0.1 mph. By the time he pulled back over the road was clear of ANYTHING for miles and miles.

Of course shortly after passing the trucks i did catch up with the cars ahead of us ^_^

But still, was so damned annoying!
