Hi guys came across this game, "Infinity" (http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php)
which is similar to EVE online, however you fly the ships with a joystick (or keyboard) there are no learning skills and you can fly through some of the asteroids. check out the demo videos in media section.
release date is a couple of years away.

Jumpgate was, if I remember right, an actual space flight sim as well (in the sense you could use a joystick to fly about).
So more elite online than eve. Never got round to playing it in the end either, shame.

Yes, Jumpgate was. It was full-inertia style too, so more I:WAR than Elite in terms of flight style.
I really enjoyed it.

I keep hoping X4 will be the next great mmo, but still not sure if they will make it multiplayer.
X3 Reunion was truely fantastic.

I always thought the successor to Jumpgate was Vendetta Online? I took part in the beta test for that game and it had proper physics i.e. you had to counteract movement with thrust in the opposite direction. This allowed you to use a joystick and rotate on your axis whilst hurtling along in one direction and firing, and you had to "lead" the enemy with your weapons to account for travel time.
Eve had originally pushed the envelope from DarkSpace and tried something new when it was first released, a less arcade style type of gameplay and with future plans like Ambulation in the works and constant engine/graphic updates, i'm confident CCP will keep injecting life into the game.
However the planet interaction and fighting in rings of a planet looks quite sexy :)

CCP are only implamenting the new shiney graphics and things like "in station body experiences" to help them basically use EvE as a test environment for thier own inhouse graphics engine. If it wasnt for them wanting to develop this engine to speed up development times on future titles you could bet EvE wouldnt be getting half of these features.

Surely that's no different to any other software development company tho.
