Be are great good support too, having a mac will make no difference at all if you have your network setup already.

the be box is just a network device and should work fine.

Yea as said bt ez64 there shouldnt be any problems using Be with a mac it is all based on the same tcp/ip protocal as standard so it all works no matter what it is (even linux)

Thanks for the reply! The only potential problem I can see is that my computer is not by the main socket and so I was planning on plugging the router into the extension socket. I've heard this could be a problem?
The main socket is too far away unfortunately and I would have to have a long messy extension cable running across the hall otherwise, which I cant' do really. So I guess the other alternative would beto get a wireless adaptor but I don't want to do that unless I have to.
Also, I'm not sure whether to order it now what with Christmas coming up or wait another month (I dont want to order at the beginning of a month as it means I'd have to pay my old isp for the whole month even if I didnt use it after cancelling).
I dont know how fast BT would be in activating the line at this time of year? Having heard some, 'unpleasant' things about them at times :-)
Id be grateful for any advice from you experts! Its all very confusing to me and part of the reason I've put off getting broadband for so long!

BT will do one of two things:

1. Take forever to do it.
2. Do it insanely quickly.

As for using the phone extension, as long as it's fairly good quality, and doesn't go all round the house, it should be ok. Just make sure to put filters on ALL the sockets where something plugs in, or you'll encounter problems.

Question is this actually a brand new Internet connection on a line that has never had one or are you changing from one isp to Be broadband if so read below, if its a new provide them it shouldn't matter when you cancel the old one as you only pay for the new one when the service is there and in the mean time you have a service you know is working.

when your moving from one ISP to another this is a Migration and it all happens in a day there is no setup time just the time waiting for the switchover, when this happens reboot your equipment with the new login details in and voila its done.

as for the filter question, it can degrade the speed and stability of a line but the only way to test that its ok for you is to try it, the worst that can happen is you wont get a connection and will have to plug it into the master socket. the best that can happen is it works and there are no issues, if you do have issues however just post on here :p

Hi,
thanks everyone for the replies! Inferno yes my line has never had broadband before so it will have to be also activated at the exhange, Im currently on dialup.
Yea Im not sure how good the extension socket is - I know it wasnt done professionally but by a friend of a friend. However Ive used to for dialup and its always been ok though I know that is totally different to broadband.
Someone metnioned filters, - does the Be router come with filters or will I have to buy one?
Thanks!

Hi, well I hope its the latter rather than the former! I'm sure how god the extension is but it only goes from the main socket down the hall and round the corner into the room where the computer is. It doesn't go all round the house, no.

You'll probably be OK then.

My phone extension was installed by me, runs under the floor, through a door, along a wall, dangling down from a picture rail. Looks like crap, works perfectly. Full 8mbps download speed. It's not something I'd worry about TBH.

Thanks everyone. Well so far everything seems to have gone smoothly! I must say Im impressed with Be! I ordered on the 13th, and today my box arrived and Im up and running and its great! Very fast. Although it still seems very *weird* not to dial up a number!
The only question I have is....I read that you are supposed ot leave the router switched on. If it happens to get switched off is that a problem?
I might have to move a wire or something.
