Omega Sektor in Birmingham are holding a retro gaming event on 21st December at 8:00pm (til late), with a host of retro consoles (NES, SNES, N64, MD, Saturn, Dreamcast, Ataris, etc). There will be tournaments to win prizes and drinks promos. Yes, I work there, and yes I am advertising, but I thought you would all like to know as this is a great opportunity to meet with a lot of like minded gamers and have some proper tournament style play on games that you know and love. We also have 440 pcs if you fancy some pc gaming as well!

nah.. its not that im referring to. for home users when steam releases an update you get the incremental update. eg Team fortress 2 has a file which is just over 1Gb in size, when an update is released the home users get a small file to download that then gets included in the team fortress 2 file.

Rephrasing that.. you just download the update.. not the entire new file..

However, if you are part of the valves cafe program then you will be using a marvelous little program called CAS, or Client Access Server.

What CAS does is downlaod the updates for you in the back office, and then when a client wants to play the server in the back office pumps out the update to the client pc.. its biggest issue is that it doesnt pump out the incremental update but the entire file..

2 weeks ago valve released a small "steam" update that for home users was over in a blink.. however Cyber cafes using Cas had to re-issue Counter strike 1.6, CS Source, Dod Source, Hl2, and the episodes in their entirity.. took me hours.. and thats with 32 pcs and a gigabit backbone..

They must have their hands full keeping 440 pcs patched.. drives me mad somedays when 3 games companies release patches on the same day..

Yep, we use CAS - the tech team have a great time doing 12hr night shifts while they do periodical ghosting sessions, but they're hardcore - I think they somehow enjoy it! :)
