Applause for CCP! :fist:
IF YOU HAVEN'T REBOOTED YET, YOU CAN FIX IT FROM WINDOWS
To fix:
Open notepad.
copy in:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
with whatever os you have.
go to "save as" and make sure you change it to all files (otherwise you end up with boot.ini.txt) and save as c:\boot.ini.
go to start->run->cmd
enter "attrib +s +h +a boot.ini" when at the c:\ prompt
to verify, go to start->run->msconfig and there should be a tab for boot.ini
IF YOU REBOOTED AND YOUR SYSTEM DOESN'T BOOT ANYMORE:
Boot from your OS cd. and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. Choose the corresponding number asked of you for your OS is on, normally its #1 Then type:
Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot

Its a simple mistake, but then again naming your game files the same as system files is just asking for trouble really.

A simple mistake for a clueless secondary school student doing his first programming project maybe..... not a team of software developers!!!
I mean not checking your paths correctly when deleting files?? Let alone files with the same name as critical OS boot files..

What if I have rebooted... ? Also bear in mind I have a USB keyboard (No bios access), SATA drives (unreadable outside windows?), no windows CD to hand and no floppy drive... I'm screwed aren't I?
UnBELEIVABLE levels of fail by CCP. Not looking forward to the hordes of WoW etc. players pointing and laughing. :(

If you rebooted then you should keep reading until it gets to the bit about what to do if you rebooted ;)
e: no windows CD to hand? Thats almost as careless as CCPs error. Beg/borrow/steal one, you need it.

Ryv, download the .iso of this and burn it to CD:
http://gag.sourceforge.net/
This is a standalone boot manager and should allow you to boot your PC and fix the boot.ini file.

Except he won't know what should be in the file, he needs to go through windows setup to repair it properly.

its an alternate bootloader and very simple to use.

Copying the windows CD is (or was) actually legal. You are paying for the license to use the software, the installation files are free.

I've been playing eve for 3 years or so and its about par for the course - their QA is non-existant which is why i only re-activate once every few months to see if its improved - I guess i should take another look at the premium client. From what i've read if u do a full install from premium client its fine its only if u do an upgrade.it cocks up, and then only if eve resides on same drive as your OS.

Well considering they had it listed as WARNING! and had removed the offending code within hours? Or faster? Mistakes do happen and yeah, EPIC COCKUP! But the graphics are shiney (or will be when my PC works again).
So yeah anyone who updated between 2 and 4am will have trouble but its fixable. Anyone going "waaa legal we want money" can go and fo. Isnt it 80 man years of worth that has gone into this?

Well, to update, it would seem that the healing power of the MPUK community's combined IT genius can now function as remote admin tech support.
With zero intervention, the PC booted, showing "Invalid Boot.ini, booting from C:\Windows\" I will be contacting the vatican to see if this counts as a miracle attributable to Afty, Pumpkin et al who helped.

To kalleth
With regards to your other thread, no I dont think anyone could claim any legal action against CCP for this.
The legal action you are speaking of would be for inconveniance as a result of loss of data.
Seeing as no data is lost and files are recoverable, there would be no grounds whatsoever for that kind of suit. The only thing I could think of that you could sue for would be the cost of having someone else fix your computer and recover your data. Which personally, I would say isnt worth it.
Thrud
7th December 2007, 11:11
Of course, why, oh why would the players of Eve want to sue CCP, surely you wouldn't want to risk shutting down the makers of a game you love playing?
WhiteKnight
7th December 2007, 11:15
Dedicated players wouldnt. But there are going to be at least a reasonable amount of people who decided to play only recently. They might be pissed enough to try it on.
