hiho!
Just wondering if theres anyone else whos getting this right now - i made a post on the steam forums but the only reply i got was from americans which doesnt really help my situation. Theres 2 things currently shafting me in TF2 at the moment
1. I keep getting around 50 choke everytime theres a large fight - this is happening the most on cp_well in the middle and its driving me nuts. Me and my brother both play TF2 and we both get it. We've tried updating the routers firmware (Tis a netgear one btw) turning off Anti Virus and so forth but none of it works.
I've always had choke - but it didnt used to be at 50 as much as this and annoying me as much. I have BT as my ISP so im wondering if they're just being the dicks they usually are and cocking up my line a little
2. Hits of loss keep happening - usually only in clan matches so anim gets raged. This is only happening on cp_well at the moment. It's usually when i enter a place with a big fight and bam, i'm frozen for 10seconds, connection warning thingy pops up in the top corner and then i return with 50 loss 50 choke and half of my body over the other side of the room.
The only reply on the steam forums was that i should try turning down some settings - but after putting them all on low and knowing im running a machine that spits on this game it didnt help still :(
Has anyone else heard of this / had this at all? I'm just wondering if it's just BT being fags seeing as i've pretty much turned everything off / updating everything / tried the various connections that i can on my end.
Obviously if i were to ring them up the answer would be 'line check says fine' in an indian accent so theres no point doing that unless im certain its them :p
Thanks in advance
Tom

if both pcs are ok, ring them up your line may be synced too high or it could just be poor routes around your area, the netgear router shouldnt cause any problems on the whole there decent hardware.
is this on a multiplay server as well?, if not it may be server side related or a bad install of TF2 on both machines or some dodgy network setup.
are you using ICS as well?

i've tried many servers - all different hosts and a couple have been multiplay. All do the same
no idea what ICS is :p and ym network is ifne in every game but this :(. I'm not network man though i just set it up and got it working and that was fine for me

As stated before have you tried a full re-install? I know it's on both computers but it's still worth a try.
Also have you attacked the regular tech issues such as downloading the latest graphics drivers and such?
The problems with these sort of issues are so varied so it's really taking the time to eliminate all the possible causes. I had choke and lag up to 150 the other day. I got so frustrated i came of and run loads of tests. It turned out that i was using Sky anytime PC and paused a download and CLOSED the programme but it was STILL downloading......ye the programmes still glitchy obviously.
Also are both of the PC's running of the same line? What is the connection speed of your line? Are you using wireless? Do you have UPnP enabled in your router (available through the router web browser).
Also could you post both PC's specs on here and the actual router details?
I will see if i can help.
Thanks

newest graphics drivers are on
Both Pc's are on the same line yes (connection speed is 2MB down 256k up)
Neither are on wireless
Yes i have UPnP enabled
im not sure about my brothers computer exaclty for specs :p i can ask him later if you really need detail but its not exactly great. 2GB memory, single core AMD processor and a 256MB nvidia card (think its a 7900GS or similar) running windows XP
Mine:
4GB DDR2 Memory
Athlon x2 6000+ duel Core
8800 GTX 768MB
Asus MSN32-SLI Deluxe Mobo
Windows XP
The router is a netgear DG834G Wireless firewall router.
Anything else? :D i havent tried re-installing TF2 yet

i get this problem quite often atm ever since regrading my broadband, sometimes ill get a ping of 150+ then it'll go back to 50-40 which i can deal with. I would hassle ur ISP, lie if you have to- telling them how bad the speed is and get them to have a look at the exchange or to find out what the problem is.
one other thing that Parva told me once is to do a tracert and then u shud be able to see where the problem is starting from..
if you find anything out that solves it, pls let me know as i've got exactly the same router and pretty much same pc set up so if it's anything other than BT lines / ISP faulty equipment then let me know ;)

Wireless is nearly always a bad idea for online gaming, can you temporarily wire the connection and see if it makes any difference? It would also be worth doing a tracert to 85.236.100.241 and pasting the results here so we can see if there's any downstream problem. Be sure to do this when you're having the problems you are experiencing though.

I always get a 60ms time during night/evening and +120 during daytime. If i do a tracert the last hop before *.multiplay.co.uk is the worst and thats the one which is high pinging during daytimes :s

I have had a look around and i can't seem to find much on it. On reflection to the information you have givem me i couldn't understand why it is happening.
All i can suggest you do is to try new ethernet cables from your router to both PC's.
Also try speaking with BT about the problem. I have had bad experiances with ISP's myself and are now very comfortable in a decent line. The only way i got around the "palming off" was to mention that i would approach Offcom with my issue. They soon snap up and listen!
Try my two suggestions first and see how you go.
Sorry it wasn't more revealing but i hope these two suggestions help.
Thanks

It'll be the ISP btw guys and not the exchange, im a couple hundred metre's down the road from Tom and i dont get these issues. Although i do have people in my house occasionally raping my conn to 700 ping :\

Thats a router which doesnt care about ping only real data so can be ignored if your final destination is good.
