View Full Version : The new router thread!

I'm in the market for a new Wireless router for my house :)

I'm currently using a Netgear something, off the top of my head, a WGT624. Frankly I'm sick of it, dropping my connections, resetting itself when I change any settings and rebooting when it gets a bad packet.

A quick look around led me here, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128049

Other suggestions would be welcome. I'm a cable user, so have no need for an integrated ADSL modem. I'm really looking for a 108mbps+ wifi AP, with at least 4 wired ports.

What are peoples feelings on the new N series draft AP's out there?

For the home user kit I've always found anything Linksys to be pretty solid if its just functioning as an AP.

Netgear are horrible, they used to make OK kit.

You can also get some fairly cheap Aironet boxes from Ebay which I have used in corp environments and have again been solid as a rock:

i wouldn't mind being a parasite on this thread instead of making my own :) . i've currently got an efficient 5861 router which runs at 10mb/s for the lan, which is fine for sharing the 2mn internet but is crap for comp-comp talk. so i'm looking for a basic ADSL router which just sits in the corner, stable as a rock. wireless would be nice, but not necessary. i guess everything comes with a basic firewall nowadays.

Draytek make very good routers... have used them in corp environments and they're rock solid. Fairly pricey but you get a decent feature set and reliability.

Netgear routers/switches have often given me trouble although some have been okay... My BuffaloTech Airstation (WiFi 54g, 4 port switch with router/firewall) has been running for years and has never given me a problem!

I couldn't recommend Draytek anymore, they are pure win wrapped in plastic. :)

They can be a bit pricey from stores but I got a 2900 from ebay at half the price of what it was worth retail and that was brand new and after using it, I would have easily paid full price for another one.

EDIT: dammit Halos beat me to it hehe

Drayteks are for ADSL, Neon is on cable IIRC.

They also do wireless routers (http://www.draytek.com/product/broadband_router/vigor2100vg/vigor2100vg.php)...

I have this; http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=562392

Its nicely priced and does alot for the money, never had a problem with it dropping wireless, whilst moving around the house with my phone etc. The print server works very effectively and so does the NAS usb slots. Ask anything about it in IRC, Neon.

bah the netgear DG834PN does it all for more, 4 pc;s on constant whack on the wired and 4 devices always connected and video streaming on the wireless, no drops hardly any packet loss its awesome.

The D-LINK Routers are slightly more complicated as far as user interface goes compared to a Netgear. The D-Link model you are on about will certainly do the job for what you need. Im quite supirsed your having problems with the Netgear tbh.

Drayteks are nice if you have the £££'s.

Yeh Draytek do fantastic routers. the new 2910's they do are rock solid from the ones we've put in our sites so far!

I did not know that!

I've only ever seen ADSL routers on their site before. Then again, that's what I've been looking for!

The DrayTek router isn't 108mbps, so it doesn't meet my requirements.

yeah there not too good for wireless for home users, everything else tho draytek.

dont go for the 270mb wireless tho its a draft standard and not a official 802.xxx it has been for about 2 years now.

If you want wireless get a wireless-N one :) Up to 300 megabits. (emphasis on up to)

Well, the obvious flaw with buying an N series router at the moment, is that they are all based on the 'draft' specification. So there is potential for the spec to change and the router become less than usefull.

Perhaps I will hold out untill the 5hz N series routers are released for real.

i vote linksys. saying that, i only brought my old one because it looked good =/

With draft wireless, it's not an issue if they do change the spec, as a firmware upgrade should sort it to the formal standard. Same goes for WLAN NICs. Most Wireless devices use software on the cards to do the work.

Link the 5861 up to a cheap switch and or a dedicated AP. The 5861 is a fantastic little router thats highly underrated. You'll have a job getting a more reliable consumer router. (It was easily beating the Cisco Soho97 that replaced it until i sorted out firmware, which costs for cisco stuff... Replaced it because I were doing CCNA)
