View Full Version : High latency from Zen to Telia

Can someone please shed some light on why Zen Internet appear to have a massive latency issue getting through the Telia network, when the other UK ISP's appear to be fine?

8 36 ms 36 ms 37 ms sl-bb22-lon-9-0.sprintlink.net [213.206.128.104]

9 40 ms 37 ms 35 ms ldn-b4-link.telia.net [80.239.193.97]
10 36 ms 36 ms 37 ms ldn-bb2-link.telia.net [80.91.254.21]
11 252 ms 247 ms 251 ms prs-bb2-pos6-0-0.telia.net [213.248.65.114]
12 253 ms 256 ms 259 ms prs-b1-link.telia.net [80.91.250.253]
13 255 ms 256 ms 253 ms prs-rosy-s50.telia.net [80.91.251.90]

560ms lag in WoW means PVP is pretty much unplayable. And it would seem only Zen are having this problem.

looks like an issue on telias network from london to paris on that trace. Would be worth running like winmtr for a while to get an idea of the latency over 5-10 minutes, as this could just be a one-off spike.

How queer.

A trace from a box at work (on JANET) gives:

4 lond-bar2.ja.net (193.62.217.17) 7.073 ms 6.500 ms 6.749 ms
5 ge-2-1-2.lond-sbr4.ja.net (146.97.35.85) 6.522 ms 6.439 ms 7.209 ms
6 ldn-b4-link.telia.net (213.248.100.237) 7.071 ms 7.091 ms 6.659 ms
7 ldn-bb1-link.telia.net (80.91.251.18) 6.624 ms 6.840 ms ldn-bb2-link.telia.net (80.91.254.21) 7.708 ms
8 prs-bb2-pos6-0-0.telia.net (213.248.65.114) 14.464 ms prs-bb1-pos6-0-0.telia.net (213.248.64.9) 15.075 ms 13.740 ms
9 prs-b1-link.telia.net (80.91.250.249) 14.439 ms 13.926 ms 14.425 ms
10 prs-rosy-s50.telia.net (80.91.251.90) 15.909 ms * *

Whereas my home connection gives the same as andyf, yet they go through the same peer with the long latency.

they don't appear to go through the same route. One leaves london on a different link:

ldn-bb1-link.telia.net (80.91.251.18)
vs.
ldn-bb2-link.telia.net [80.91.254.21]

so it's ldn-bb2 --> prs that's screwed.

Although this being said, here's the trace I did just now from our core network:

traceroute to 80.91.251.90 (80.91.251.90), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets
1 hsrp1-vlan96.ixnlon.as35028.net (85.236.96.252) 0.341 ms 0.250 ms 0.282 ms
2 ae0-51.lon11.ip.tiscali.net (213.200.78.81) 0.428 ms 0.442 ms 0.431 ms
3 so-3-1-0.lon22.ip.tiscali.net (213.200.80.30) 0.579 ms 0.608 ms 0.577 ms
4 213.200.78.238 (213.200.78.238) 0.725 ms 0.642 ms 0.575 ms
5 ldn-bb2-link.telia.net (80.91.250.229) 0.579 ms 0.573 ms 0.574 ms
6 prs-bb2-pos6-0-0.telia.net (213.248.65.114) 7.744 ms 7.631 ms 7.597 ms
7 prs-b1-link.telia.net (80.91.250.249) 7.742 ms 7.780 ms 7.746 ms
8 prs-rosy-s50.telia.net (80.91.251.90) 8.325 ms * 8.160 ms

Difficult to fully debug without the reverse route though, as it may be the return trip going a ****ty route causing the issues.

Found some follow-up information about.

Zen employee is posting in the thread too - they can't do anything about it, it's a fault that Telia / Blizzard will have to sort out. Looks like there's -quite- a few people starting to get ticked off with it so hopefully a fix will be forthcoming quickly. There's also a load of posts on the Blizzard tech support / game latency subforums with traceroutes galore.

Andy, that's how it was on NTL cable for a while. Constantly high pings and packet loss inside the Telia network. After what seemed like the 100th thread on the WoW Europe forums moaning about it, Blizzard got involved and had Telia fix it. Sounds similar to what is happening on Zen?
