How addictive is Eve??
I had bad addictions to WoW.... is this slightly less immersive.
And is it more casual?

The biggest philosophical difference between the two is the way that "levelling" is dealt with.
In WoW the focus is on grinding to 70, then grinding for rep.
In Eve the levelling/character progression is done on a real-time basis. Time from character creation determines ability. Learning all skills to full level would take something like 3 years. This means that there is no incentive to keep playing/gaining XP to level. It happens automatically.
This to my mind takes away the single most addictive factor in the game and changes the focus from "What do I need to do to get to X" to "What do I feel like doing" and this makes for a less addictive, but no less enjoyable, experience.

What he said :)
Of course one of the other good things with EVE is that all upgrades are FREE.... as in "no extra money and everyone gets them".

Yes. The upcoming Trinity patch compares fairly favorably against the various WoW expansions. Oh hi. Free complete graphical reworking. And a **** load of new ships, skills and missions. :D

Sounds like my sort of game, so you would say it is for more of a casual gamer then?

Learning all skills to full level would take something like 3 years.
Agreed with it all except that part ;) show me how to learn 480m SP in 3 years and i'm yours! :awesome:

I tried to put all the skills into evemon to calculate out how long it would take and it crashed :D
Just to train all the skills in Corp and Drones (the first 2 categories) would take over 800 days.
Edit:
Just pushed EveMon as far as it`ll go before it crashes. From my current point (10 mil skill points) if i wanted to learn Corp, Drones, and most of electronics plus max out all the learning skills for a total of 73 unique skills (303 skill steps). It would take 1498 days. 1286 with my current implant set, and 1082 with the +5 implant set (the best ive found on the market).
So thats just about the better part of 3 out of 14 categories by October 2010
I`m thinking Aards estimate below of 28years isnt far off :)

I got a char to 17m in a year with a pretty much optimal build. So I guess if you want a maxed char you should settle in for 28 years :p

3 years has given me uhh 51mil ish SP. Stupid lack of implants/learning skills origionally though. heck went though a big stage of "30+ mil per +3 implant" which made life fun.
Trinity is a bit meh so far. 5 new types of ship (4 TII 1 capital) but alot of changes and some nasty ones. I have been crying a bit over the EOS losing drones and 2 turrets.
Also carriers losing pretty much any use they had (unless they have retracted the fighter nerf)
Graphics look shiney though, cant wait to play with it looking that good.

so how much will that cost me a month??
If it's a tenner that would be £3360 to level all the way up (before expansions or whatever may come along) LOL.

£3360 for 28yrs worth of gaming isnt THAT bad tbh.

I'm thinking about starting an alt out on the purist learning skills first (which accelerate you ability to learn other skills, but have no other benefit) and will be interested to see the difference. Whacking in a full set of Improved attibute enhancer chips right from the off should help.

The difference:
I started Vando in October 05, didn't use the best starting stats, didn't use implants until 10 months ago, didn't properly do learning skills until then either, and I missed about 5 months training so 19 months of training down the line I have 19.3m sp.
The alt that I started in October 06 I did all the optimal learning skills first, got +4s, and that char now has 17.3m sp after 12 months.
So yeah, it makes a difference :p

Can you actually get the +7 Elite implants ?
They are listed in EveMon, but i cant see any in game at all, not even on contract.
Might be they are "for future use" and not actually active in game yet.
That said, even if they were in the game the would probably cost about $rofflehahahaha

Out of interest, what are the best starting stats?

I dont think there is a "best" setup to go for, moreso if you have a specific aim for your character and what you want to achieve ingame then you can tailor the stats for a particular role. If you are more interested in shooting people in the face then you can lean towards Perception and Willpower, If you fancy some Electronic Warfare or Production/research skills then learn more towards Intelligence and Memory. However there are so many different skills out there that depend on a various mix of different stats it would be hard for me to pinpoint an exact layout, especially as your requirements or interests may differ over the course of the months you play.
I generally find a good balanced stat layout at the beginning good to get you going, you can always improve upon a stat later on post-character creation.

there is a free 14 day trial available for you to see if you like it, the download is 600 ish Mb and the game doesnt require buying as such, you just pay the monthly fee and thats it.
I'm a bit narked at the moment, warped into a 0.0 system yesterday having been told by my corp mates was clear only to get ganked and pod killed in insta-gib fashion, then inmediately after my corp mates decide to mention, oh well it was clear when we were there 10 minutes ago.. :(

May I also add that the stats dont affect your ability to do whatever you want to do ingame, just the training time of the skills of which its based on :p

Yes, that's another aspect of EVE that's rather nice: the lack of character class systems. Anyone can do anything. It's just that it may take longer to learn the necessary. :(
