I cant seem to connect to any TF2 server, I can get a server list, get server info for the players, but when double click to join get Server Not responding window.

Steam and TF2 is all fully upto date

Any ideas?

quit steam
rename the clientregistry.blob
restart steam.

You're not running in a DMZ by any chance are you?

Can we have a picture of what filters you have on please.

Also your PC specs would be good along with what current drivers you have for the graphics card.

Also please supply us with a DxDiag screen print and your general network configuration.

Once done finally let us know of any new pieces of software that you have installed recently and i will take a look into this one.

Thanks

Not running a DMZ no.

Badger,

My specs are in my sig.

I'm using the nVidia driver from the 18th September ver 163.69

Ill do a screen shot of the filter but that wont make any difference as I am able to get the server lists I just cant join any of the servers.

Running Vista Ultimate 64bit have been since November and I have been on-line with CSS, HL2DM and Hidden Source to name a few all on-line and without any problems.

Network setup is straight DHCP I have tried with both the Vista firewall on and off to no difference.

With regards to new software, just the Orange box

try using a static IP and not dynamic, and the graphics would have nothing to do with this problem,

sounds like a vista update to me

Have you tried forwarding the Steam ports to your routers firewall?

If not then try this -

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/WGR614/Counter_Strike.htm

If it is still present, exit Steam and try deleting everything in your steam directory except the steam.exe and the \steamapps folder.
Restart Steam and see if it works.

Also have you tried deleting the clientregistry.blob file yet?

Let me know.

Where are the save games kept for the HL2 games as at the weekend ill remove Steam delete the whole folder and reload it

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\[account]\half-life 2\hl2\SAVE
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\[account]\half-life 2 episode one\episodic\SAVE
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\[account]\half-life 2 episode two\ep2\SAVE
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\[account]\portal\portal\SAVE

These are the ones you are probably after.

I would keep your GCF files located in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps

Move them out into a temporary directory, reinstall steam and move them back.
They are just the games files and it'll take a lot of downloading to get them back.

Edit: yeah definitely keep the gcf files, the orange box is about 15gb by itself let alone any other games you might have.

Are you trying to connect to the server whilst out of game? You may find it works better trying to join whilst you are already in TF2, does for me.

Anim he said that it was whilst he was ingame.

Ok sooooo did you try the port forwarding?

It's strange i get the feeling it's more to do your network than a Steam related issue.....either way yes do a complete re-install and see how that go's.

Keep us informed.

I have this problem outside of the game and inside the game.

I have tried the port forwarding on the router to no avail.

I have since unistalled Steam and like a twat forgot to backup my steamapps folder but not biggie, will do a full reinstall of it over the weekend and see how we go.

Ok if you re-install and it's still not working try using a third party programme to connect to a server.

Xfire (www.xfire.com) is always a good one to try as you can add one of the multiplay IP's through the favourites section and then connect to it. If that works then it's probably some sort of corrupt coding in a file (which again should be sorted if you are doing a full install).

Hope one of these works for you but in the meantime i will keep an eye out for some fixes for you.

Ill give xfire a go but didnt have any joy connecting via the console either but will try it none the less though

Connecting through console, connecting through the game and connecting through the main steam server listing use all the same coding files. So it would not make any difference.

I don't quite know if Xfire would do it or not but it's worth a shot.

Let me know.

I had exactly the same problem at the very beginning.
I had to open up the ports on my Speedtouch router in Games & Applications using the settings from PortForward.com [ here if you have a Speedtouch router (http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Thomson-Alcatel/Speedtouch780v6/Steam_Client.htm)]

That made all my connection problems disappear.

Right an update:

I have fully reinstalled Vista by that I mean I have deleted the partition, recreated it, formatted it reinstalled Vista. All i have installed on it is Steam, nVidia driver, NIC driver. I also not installed any updates, or extra firewalls.

I have the steam ports forwarded onto my PC as the PortForward.com site says for my router. I have also done a full factory reset on my router.

Go into Steam and will only find about 450 servers with the All filter selected. After several refreshes.

So needless to say I utterly pissed off with this now in the fact I cant play some decent games.

*Update*

Right I have done some more digging and it would appear that searching for servers even if I have a single game selected kills the router. Connections already established eg MSN, updates, streaming music etc are all working fine, however you can not make any new connections to the internet.

I have looked at hte CPU on my router which idles at 8% but jumps to almost 60% when Steam tries to get a sever list but if you kill steam off the CPU usages stays high. The router is also running the latest version

*Update 2*

Have done a full reinstall of steam and redownloaded all the games I am able to launch the game and from the console connect to a server by its ip via the connect command

So i pressume it's working ok now?

Nikumba
28th October 2007, 18:21
Its working ish. If I have the IP and hte port of a server then I can load the game up, open the console and connect that way. I still am unable to get an internet server list to display without killing my router.

So its not a big deal as it was, however just need MPUK to update their gaming site so I can get a list of the TF2 servers running

All TF2 servers are listed here:

Well i am glad it is partially working at least.

It obviously sounds more and more like a router issue. I suggest searching for fix's from support sites for your router.

If i can help anymore let me know.
