Title says it all folks.........post your comments, good or bad.

I'll start.

I'm a hardcore UT99 fan.
2K3 was a joke and 2k4 for me was an improvement, although I never could get in to it.

Now UT3 IMO is a much better game.
First of, the movement is more UT99. It's not 100% the same but I'm happy with it. The gameplay is excellent although my computer battles to run it, so I can only imagine what it will be like once I have a major upgrade.

The sniper (my fav weapon) is not as fast as I would like but it's not bad.

I have a few more comments but will leave them for now.

Your thoughts on the game so far?
Discuss.

:(: doesn't run very well on my machine despite a lot of tweaking, so all the 'awesome' comments are lost on me. Can't contemplate trying online games with the current performance. Certainly better than UT2003/2004 as far as the general feel goes.

The sniper is crap, the shock rifle actually has more of a sniper feel to it, rockets and flak are ok, enforcer is pretty ropey compared to the UT99 one.

The hoverboard is a lot of fun but I could really do without all the vehicles - but as there's no normal CTF on the demo it's fine for the short term.

Don't know whether or not to cancel my order for the full game, if it'll cost an arm and a leg to upgrade things just to see what the rest of the game's like. May just wait for the PS3 version instead.

Mine cost me ~£400 a year or so ago for an upgrade, and it runs ut3 fairly well

Around 30-40fps (1600x1050) on a:

4600+ X2
256MB 7600GT
2GB OCZ "performance" RAM

i'm guessing it'll be around the £300 mark now if your lucky...

Well I loved UT99, never got in to UT2k anything. Double/wall/sky/air jumping backflipping blah blah was the main turnoff.

UT3 is ace though, and this is only a "Beta Demo". The vehicles suck though, but I'm guessing (hoping) this can easily be disabled on the server side.

Is it worth a £300-400 hardware upgrade?? Yeah defo. I can see this engine being used in a ****ton of games, so even if you don't like UT3 your still gona need it.

Speaking of PC's battling to run it.......my poor Dell Dimension 8250 battles to run it. After 10 minutes of "settling down" it plays smooth but on very low graphics (2/5).

I've had my pc for 6 years and so a new mobo is on the cards. It's also a xmas (early) present to myself.

So, I'm looking at the top of the range Dell XPS 720 desktop.
Here's a link (the 720 model on the far right).

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/desktops_best?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

I'd really appreciate comments from people who know their hardware. I'm not considering buying it just for UT3 but I do want the peace of mind that this beast will run it on max settings. Looking at the comments it would seem so. I know it's quite pricey but I paid over £2000 for my 8250 6 years ago, so around £1200 is ok for me :P

What do you think?
(sorry, slighlty off topic).

Some more comments on the demo:

1. I like the hoverboard. Makes sense for very large maps. Quite like the way you can grapple on to vehicles and hitch a ride.

2. The dark walker is a beast! Although when you take it, everyone nails you :P

got off a newsgroup server I use and installed fine
changed options as per usual and it played fine.

on my first try at online gaming on a mpuk server I got a huge bsod

this prompted me to change over my psu and take out 1 stick of ram (was running with 3gb)
since then I tried offline and it has been ok but I haven't tried online yet.

I'll be changing mobo, cpu, ram and loading on vista so probs won't be able to try tonite

my only moan about it is no instjive - however sniper looks like insta to me :p

Iv played a few games now, and im loving it so far. The movement is nice, altho its gonna take some getting used to again. The weapons are balanced and "feel" excellent, apart from the alternate Link which feels very "meh"

the Flak and Rockets are awesome, and the shock is BACK BABY. Also i reckon the sniper will be awesome if i had some more FPS.

Cranked everything right down including the res to try and get some decent FPS, got it up to about 40/50 now. My CPU is the problem i reckon, il prolly do a cheap upgrade of Mobo and CPU at some point, my GFX card shud be ok.

There are some problems though. Epic have rushed out this demo, its so apparent. Epic have always said "when its ready" as their statement on anything time related, and this clearly isnt. The demo smacks of "we've been told to release a demo now by the bean counters", and it shows. The dedicated server side stuff is a joke (hence killing working for hours to get them all up). No-one else has got any servers up in numbers yet as they are all listener servers.

The menu is awful, and when i say awful i mean AWFUL. The game browser is pants, (half the bl00dyserver names dont show up) the login system is just WTF and its a shame cus the game itself is really enjoyable. Had a good vCTF game earlier which went into extra time for 20 mins but was a lot of fun.

Based on this i dont think the full game will be out by i32, cus there is a lot of work to do. I dont understand how stuff that has been built into so many previous releases with regard to server side code and server browsers can be so nerfed up in the demo. I mean, we're not mid production here, we're near the end. I hope its a lot more polised than this when it goes gold.

As for the gameplay though, im impressed :D

Thankfully the gameplay is good and doesn't feel clumsy like 2k3/2k4, the weapons are good, in particular the link gun is better, yet the mini is a bit odd?

Graphically it's a bit washed out to me and doesn't look as good is it plays. Skins I still can't see all that well, which is extremely frustrating and the menu system is pants, also where's normal translocator CTF? Vehicle CTF I'm not going to even consider playing tbh ...

On the whole though, it's got wheels and you would expect it to be a lot more polished when the retail version comes along and it will be great if it can revitalize our UT scene.

played a little bit now, but i have not enough ram to get it going smooth at online play (only 1GB)

i like the movement, that the dodge-double jump is gone
weapons are cool, but i think its too easy to get a combo with the asmd

i am curious what the secondary fire on the impacthammer does, is it some kind of shield?

cant wait to play some non-vehicle ctf games
since the people on alost of servers are just spamming the spawnpoints with the heavy vehicle-guns

the only thing i like with the vehicles it the ability to surf behind them on the hoverboard, thats fun

just played one dm match yet, this waker on the urban-map is much overpowered imo

lets see how long lasting it is, since i liked the 2k ut“s too at the beginning

cant wait too see a slv mod for it :D

...pretty pixelated like watching a crappy utube demo.

AMD Athlon 64, 3200+
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS (512 MB)
2048 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)

Same here really. Without too much on screen it was running just about smooth enough, but when I get to an open area it grinds right down to only a few FPS. Just had a quick blast this morning on the very initial level, offline, first against 5 "Skilled" BOTs, then against 1 "Experienced" BOT...didn't get one Frag!! :mad:

AMD Athlon 4000+
ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 :roll:
1GB

It's a laptop, so no chance to upgrade really. I'll stick with UT99 and 2K4, (which I've actually started to get quite used to...going back to UT99 after only playing 2K4 for months was quite a shock. UT99 felt sluggish and movement felt like it had a slight delay. Mind you, 2K4 felt like that when I first played that!!) :p

Piley,
A benchmark of UT3 demo with several Graphic cards (it's in french, but you can have a look at the charts) is published here : w3.revioo.com/articles/a10610_1.html (change w3 by www). More or Less, with high graphic details, you need a 8600 GT or a X1900 GT to get a 30 fps (tested with a C2D proc). AA could not be activated.

The £1300 XPS 720 should run UT3 very nicely indeed. My athlon 64 4000+ @2.75ghz (single core), 2gb PC4000, X1900XTX runs the UT3 demo very nicely in 1920x1200 and I'll admit my rig was kickass when I last upgraded, but that was over 18 months ago, so it isn't all that any more. What I'm saying is that the UT3 engine is relatively undemanding on your rig for a modern game. Which is good, seeing as it looks nice at the same time. :)

As for UT3 looking bad on 7300GS graphcs, I'm sorry but whoever sold you that as being any use at all for games is a tosser and deserves a good kick.

If you are not satisfied with your game's performance, or all the excessive blur/bloom effects etc, try some of these tweaks. You can find the ini in:

My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3 Demo\UTGame\Config\UTEngine.ini

[SystemSettings]
MotionBlur=False <-cuts out unnecessary blur fx
DepthOfField=False <-same
Bloom=False
QualityBloom=False <-unsure, but probably helps
Trilinear=False <-improves FPS

Colors will appear more vibrant and the game will feel more like previous UT's. Excessive FX are just unnecessary and I think it's a shame that people have to dig in the ini's just to disable them to get the game to look how they expect.

Make your ini read only after applying these settings.

Game runs quite slow even on low resolutions on my P4 3ghz/512 mb ram, I suppose I need more RAM to run it properly...

The gamplay reminds me of UT99, except for the messier gfx. The demo has no ordinary CTF except for CTF+crappy vehicles. Epic still didn't get that it might be handy to have a search at the server list. And the translocator has been removed which reduces the gameplay to the level of Quake... The Minigun appears to crap as well...

Not many improvments so far, I will play it a bit more just to see if I missed something. The only major thing that really is better is of course the visuals... but seriously, I couldn't care less :P

One thing about the sniper I don't like. When you zoom in the screen goes blaank and you only see the small scope area. Ok fine but in UT99 you could zoom and still see outside the zoom.

That make sense?
I prefer the UT99 way and you can quickly zoom out if you spot danger.

Hey Piley,

Before switching to UT3, be sure that someones rewrites the Redeemer-Sniper Heaven map for it ;) It's our HOME SWEET HOME! (GG last night, even if it was a lesson of humility for me professor :)

If I remember well, I read that maybe some original maps would be rewritten with the new UT engine (as it was for CS Source). Any info about that or was it just a hoax?

PS. Can't run UT3, and had no time to check for tweaks. Anyway, with an athlon 1 ghz o/c @ 1.3ghz, and a 9600pro i doubt to be able to run it!

Completely unimpressed by the demo, I'm not a UT player so to me it was just UT2004 with better graphics.
It doesn't appear to have changed the game in any major way, just more of the same with a couple of nobs on, same weapons, same vehicles, same old same old (excluding a few minor additions).
I expect to be flamed, since it appears all the UT players all love it and will play it, but I really can't see the game attracting masses of new players.

made a copy for a friend of mine (he is on dialup) and his comp crashes every time he tries to start it. His comp is more than good enough up to run it, it is a shame that a demo has to be tweaked so much to get good gameplay....

Take a look at 'KNOWN ISSUES WITH POSSIBLE FIXES' here: http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=578480

the first one solved the problem for me once I'd got the latest driver installed, but if it's a different problem one of the other suggestions might help your friend.

Oh... I thought I'd posted in this thread already... :p

Hello UT peeps! :)

Demo's great! Well it was until I realised it likes to crash all the time. Can play for ages and then *poof* - BSOD... The BSOD's that loop some sound or other are all the more discomforting - don't like putting my 'puter through that kind of distress. Makes its GiggleBytes all sad. :( So I'm just gonna wait until a 'proper' demo comes out or indeed the full game itself! Not gonna bother trying to tweak this thing since it seems so unstable + fps up and down all over the place whatever I tweak... :roll:

But, from what I have played:

Shock Combo's = Awesome!
Biorifle is surprisingly effective!
Stinger = Minigun (i.e. still killed in 0.2 of a second whilst it takes me several days to kill anyone with it...
Linkgun = See above. :p
Shock Rifle = Awesome!
Sniper = Boom! Headshot! \o/
Rocket's = Blow myself up whilst loading secondary (as usual :roll: )
Flak = Nice and bouncy!
Did I say that the Shock Rifle is awesome?

DM-Heatray = DarkWalker noobness :v
DM-Shangri-la = Mysterious FPS drop around Amp... :mystery: (love posts where I can use that smiley :p )
vCTF-whateveritscalled = lolol vehaklz! :awesome:

Look forward to insta-gibbing you all soon. :as-spin:

Toodle-oo! o/

new PC working - check (clucking bell, was a bit of a chore, but weeeeeeeee)
demo installed - check
new CPU overclocked - check
scheisse ISP magically gone from 15k download to 200k+ - check :confused:
new Gfx card overclocked - negative
UT3 tweaked - negative
got skillz - negative
Just played a few games online, and a few more offline... seems nice and fast, though I'm missing the dodge-jump to get around/away faster....
Other than that it seems better than 2k3/2k4 to me, though I'm rusty as f00k and don't have a clue where to go on the maps (no change there then...).

I seem to get about 30fps with all the eye-candy turned on (not over-clocked)
and 62 fps with it all turned off and over-clocked... looks like some sort of artificial cap*

But why-oh-why is everything (well, the guys to aim for anyway) soooo much more visibile with all the eye-candy turned off?? (seems to effectively boost ambient lighting or similar...).

The browser only brought up 19 FFA servers, and only one of those was named...*

*so I'll be rummaging around to tweak that

All three versions that I've tried from Fileplanet.com, the i32 ftp, and also the PC Gamer demo disks all don't work on my PC.
I've had a look around on the magic that is google and apparently, it's something to with that PhysX driver it decided to install.

Epic fail simply. But I've seen this being played at i32 and it really does look amazing. Shame it wont work for me. :awesome:
