Hi all,

I'm still getting a problem on UT2K4, which I think is down to my laptop, but I'm not sure how to resolve it. Generally the game plays fine, but every now and then, (roughly every few minutes), the game will freeze me. It doesn't just stop...everyone else is running around happily, and I can still look around and shoot my weapons...I just can't move. If I try and move the screen sort of trembles, for anything from 3 to 10 seconds, (usually around 3 seconds). (Prior to these pauses I do get a touch of lag, where I think I'm in one place on the map, but suddenly find myself somewhere else...often suspended over a lava-pit!!)

On one or two servers, when this problem happens, "SPEED HACK DETECTED" appears on screen during my freeze-up. I'm not using any hacks or anything...I'm just running the standard game from the Unreal Anthology load-up screen. (I've tried using the "-cpuspeed" command line hack, but must've got it wrong, as the game was juddery and unplayable.)

I'm really trying to enjoy UT2K4 more, but I can't with this pausing problem. I do wonder if it's similar to a speed issue I had with UT99, detailed in this thread -> http://forums.multiplay.co.uk/showthread.php?t=50382. It was easy to overcome the UT99 problem...I just had to run the game, drop out to Setup, and run it again. This forced my CPU up to 100% and registered the correct speed the next time the game loaded. This doesn't seem to work for UT2K4 though.

Help?!

er, i believe that the speed hack thing is just a random bug thats been there from day 1? (i could be wrong though)

I've seen one other person mention it, and it fixed itself for him. Would've thought more people would have reported it if it was a common issue.

I've searched many forums and found a few suggestions for this.

[Engine.LevelInfo]
MaxTimeMargin=0.000000
(Doesn't work.)

Disable the Wireless Polling Connection Service.
(Doesn't exist for me.)

Direct connect to router, rather than using Wireless.
(Awkward, so a last ditch attempt for me this'll be really.)

Don't use the Excessive3.0 Mutator.
(Don't know what this is, so assume I'm not using it.)

I started my own Listen Server, and didn't get the problem, so it's definitely only when I connect to other servers. I really don't want to resort to off-line games with BOTs, but might have to with UT2K4 if I can't solve this. (I guess it doesn't matter really, I'm so crap at the game that the only way I can win is to play against BOTs and set them to Novice mode!) :(:

Found the problem this evening. It's the "Wireless Zero Configuration" Service. Disabled that and the problem's gone away. (I was hoping it might make my connection "smoother" as well, or something, to make the game more slick, like UT99, but no...I'm still crap!) :D

I have to enable the WZC sometimes as my wireless won't connect so it works for me online.

Oh yes, the service needs to be running for Wireless to connect, but then I need to stop it before going into UT2K4. It was literally polling the router exactly every minute, and I'd have a few seconds of lag, then SPEED HACK DETECTED and a freeze for another few seconds. (On a crowded server I would be VERY lucky to not get fragged during this time.)

Still, all sorted now! Ready for some games soon Pete?
