We have turned off the limiting of downloads on Multiplay ADSL tonight to facilitate the quick download of this file. Shouldn't hit our 95th bill in the 6 hours to off peak *crosses fingers*.
Nice people that we are... :)

Are there new nVidia drivers too ? Cus wow ! What happened, the beta's ran sooo smoothly, one of the few things going for it, and then the demo hit and boom ! Performance out the window, even on the lowest settings possible, even in the menu's  I wouldn't have thought the demo could be worse than the beta, but boy was I wrong o_O
If someone can tell me how to get this running a hell of a lot better i'll give this another shot.

Eh, yeah, probably should've mentioned something about my system :(: Nothing exciting, but as follows:
C2D E4300 @ stock 1.8ghz
1GB DDR2 5400
7600GT overclocked
Used to be able to run the betas on high @ 1600*1200, but can't even run the menu's of the demo without getting horrendous mouselag at 800*600. Nothings changed since then, so i'm more clueless than normal

they fixed the multiple screens bug for the demo?
kr-dm1
10th September 2007, 20:00
Well, having just disabled my secondary monitor, i'm going to assume that this "multiple screens bug" is whats caught up with me after it being fine during the beta, but it seems to be fine now. Annoyingly it seems that even though I avoid multiple graphics card systems, the flaws of them reach me still D:

Anyone using Nvidia + multi screens and having very slow performance. You need to change a setting in the Nvidai control panel:
3D Settings => Manage 3D Settings => Multi-display / mixed-GPU acceleration = Single display performance mode.
This will fix performance for all OpenGL based games if you have multi screens.

/me shall try that out, thanks K :)

I dunno, graphically it looks good, but I have some issues with the medic class (Strogg side). The medic seems to have zero health; dying in only 2 or 3 shots (from full health); and the weapons they are equiped with are not very effective either. Healing takes too long, it to me seems medics are so underpowered they will not be played much in the game. I spent the majority of my time dead when playing medic. :(
I also played the class which gets the hyperblaster, that was much more fun and "fair". Maybe I just need to play it a bit more and remind myself "it is not bf2142, it is not bf2142". :v

Second night playing and still not impressed. Feels better than the beta's but it still seems to be a simple spray and pray affair. Plus the set-path-map gets boring real quick for me, much prefer the variation of the BF-style.
Talking of BF, I wonder when the next boosters out... /me wanders off

Talk about dramatic increase for me (around extra 15-20fps in all games)
Haven't tried Supcom dual screen yet, single screen games are definatly much better tho.

Ok, I think this game is going to take a bit of learning for everybody. Reading the guide linked above, it appears a solider (rocketlauncher chap) is not a frontline troop at all, he should stay back and pick off armoured targets from a distance. Most people would associate a solider with Frontline/Deathmatch play, it's almost like calling a sniper a "berserker".
When joining the game it appears everybody wants to be on the GDF side, infact i havent played as GDF at all yet. To be honest it is easier to defend than attack, especially when everybody is new and no-one is really playing their class properly yet. Stroggs FTW!
Oh, Strogg medics, when you kill an enemy (or see dead an enemy) inject them with your needle syringe thingy. That creates a spawnhost, then either you or a fellow team mate uses that spawnhost (press F on it). Next time you die, you will respawn there. (I didnt know that until last night!). Number of times I used that during the game, get shot, die, respawn, kill the person who just killed me, create spawn host, rinse, repeat :D
More I play this game, the more I'm enjoying it... Remeber it's not BFxx42, if you die often consider what class your playing, are you playing it correctly? should you really be in the thick of the action with a rocketlauncher or peashooter?

Yes it's very complicated but I think that's going to give it some longevity.
I can see us playing this 12 months down the line and still finding new ways to win.

Soldiers can pretty much be what you want to be with them. Remember each class has a choice of weaponry. The soldier class having the most variation.

I didnt realise they had a choice, but yes... just to clairfy... it appears the rocket solider shouldnt get involved, the solider with the other weapon should.. I guess.. Havent played gdf yet :S

Yeah, I'm shocked people think it has a steep learning curve, but each to their own.
Don't forget that Strogg can convert Stroyent and HP and vice versa using -/+ ;) Handy for a quick heal on the battlefield.
I have to admit that I haven't played ANY other classes yet, in any of the beta's or the demo :p ENGINEER FTW! :D
Tsung

I dont think it's a steep learning curve as such, it just "new" and without instructions not easy to fully understand. Like I didnt realise that u can convert Stroyent and HP, I didnt even realise that Stroyent is also ammo (thus when my gun ran out I switched to something poxy until i died, not realising i could resupply myself!). It's silly little things like that which can make/break a game for people. When I first played medic i was being owned, becuase I was trying to play it in the same style of medic from other games. It dont work like that.
The game runs SO nicely, I do so look forwards to playing this at the next lan party :)

Yes, the game isn't very beginner friendly without wading through all the documentation. Usually a demo comes with a tutorial or similar but I suspect a lack of one will hurt their initial player base.

Its at the end of a campaign you lose them (3maps in the case of the demo), and i prefer it, means everyone can get access to everything.
If it's anything like the original, you will be able to get "Save XP" servers though too which are also fun. You don't lose your upgrades for say a week or something. Or servers with longer campaigns.

it's the same as RTCW:ET . It makes it fair for everyone. You don't have someone with rank 3203290 who has access to every weapon and has lol upgraded armor etc.
With them not being persistant everyone is on a level playing field.
There is however persistant ranks, but they don't give you anything other than a shiny little symbol.
kr-dm1
13th September 2007, 13:02
Never played the RTCW version, so this is all new to me. So... Persistant ranks are pointless, and upgrades are... kinda pointless too. Really i'm not seeing much in the way of things to look forward to for this game, I guess I just like having something to show for my time too much :p:
Afterall, 2142 has persistant unlocks, and they're hardly over-powering. I use most of the normal kit despite the fact i've got practically everything unlocked by now. If you do it right, its not going to mess things up.
Tsung
13th September 2007, 13:13
But as you say the 2142 unlocks are not over powering, so they are just as pointless. Might as well give everybody the unlocked weapons and be done with it.
I like the idea when I join the game I know there isn't going to be people with the world of choice ( when it comes to equipment) over me, simply because they have played the game to death. How frustating is BF2142 when you apply to be commander, to be outranked, then the commander just sits on his arse and does nothing/the minimum all round?
There are pro/cons to both systems, give me shiney badges anyday :)
kr-dm1
13th September 2007, 13:19
Dunno, don't play as commander :p But while they aren't overpowering, you do at least get a level of being able to choose a direction for your avatar to go. Just because something isn't overpowering doesn't mean that you shouldn't be given the choice. Choice is always good :p:
And even if you haven't played long, because its not overpowering, you're not instantly annihilated just for not having played forever. They're just slightly better at somethings than you are, while the basic weapons might be slightly better at other things. Just for an example of that, I tend to use the PAC standard rifle on infantry maps, where I prefer the faster rate of fire, while on longer distance maps I'll use the unlocked Voss rifle with its improved scope and clip size. It might not be better for close in fights where I might lose against someone using a faster weapon, but at longer ranges i'll be able to get more shots in than they would be.
That's the kinda choice that makes it a good system. Having it wiped clean every 3 rounds just seems like an exercise in frustration to me, even if I do seem to be disparaging the forums current favorite game :B
Tsung
13th September 2007, 13:27
Have you played QW:ET ? The rewards are handed out like candy. I played as a solider last night, shot the rocketlauncher a few times and got a reward. If you fancy a change, next map, switch to medic and it will give out medic rewards. The only people I see this penalising are those who dont want to play a class properly, or people who want to switch classes/teams often... :D

you get shiny badges with ETQW.
Each part of a badge complete (say for a badge you require 30 kills overall and 1 hour in game), when you get 30 kills you will get a rank up, when you hit 1 hour in game you get a rank up. (Those are how the persistant ranks work)

you keep stats and ranks, not unlocks. it makes sure that at the start of a campaign everyone is on an even footing.
kr-dm1
13th September 2007, 21:54
Aye, i've played, and aye, got a few unlocks, although I couldn't work out the rhyme or reason behind when they were handed out, or even what to do with most of them, and they were annoyingly reset everytime the map loaded :p: So some of my attitude might stem from ignorance to the system, but otherwise I guess this is just a me thing, judging by the flak i'm getting :p:
I find working for the same things more than once an annoyance instead of a method towards a flat playing ground. Why not just remove the players and make it a spectator sport where you sit watching AI's who are all identical. People will always differ in ability, so even resetting unlocks won't bring about the even footing you're hoping for, it just means theres nothing to work towards when its all given to you within the first 5minutes. And you can't change classes on the fly to the situation on the map without losing your unlocks in whatever class you were playing before, forever ? It's these things and the linearity of the maps i've seen so far that totally put me off this game, even if the amount of people on these forums who are falling over themselves to get it does suggest i'm missing something, but I just don't see it

if you don't like it, fine. if you prefer the way it's done in other games, fine. that's the point of a demo, so you can decide if it's fun enough to spend your money on. just keep your hair on

In the game, in the top left corner you will see a missions map. Pressing M will cycle these missions, it's these objectives you need to complete in order to earn your XP.
XP will be dished out in higher ammounts to people playing classes that noone else is. Thus if you are the only soldier you will get lots of XP for damaging things, as you are, ideally, playing the class as it should be an helping your team.
As an aside, the system is great. It works. Playing on the same server across 3 rounds you will keep your unlocks which makes sense. Changing maps should reset as you face different challenges in that map in order to unlock the bonuses. If you want persistent unlocks go play BF2 and hax your profile. :)

I think the upgrade system is spot-on. I've always thought that the career upgrading implemented in Battlefield served to alienate new players, as well as detract from the enjoyment of public servers. You should already know the game well enough to have an advantage over newer players; why make it even harder for them to get an enjoyable experience from it?
Plus, as Neon said, it's more team-focused than Battlefield -- upgrades were easily obtained in Battlefield by working on your own, and while the same can be applied to Quake Wars to some extent, you're rewarded more heavily for following the objectives and considering what your team actually needs.
I'm really looking forward to the full game and, I hope, a strong community. I just hope it's done enough to persuade those in the Battlefield camp to give it a fair shot, and not dismiss it at first glance.
