Inevitably I fell out with my old git and have moved out (and lost my 512k cable in the process). I've moved into an "ADSL capable" area but am wondering which provider is best before I go order stuff ;)
I hear bad things about BT Openworld etc, so has anyone got any experience with them and/or other providers.

This is an hard question to answer cause like all isp services they have there good and bad days.
I think the top 3 at the moment are (in no order)
BT Openworld (www.btopenworld.com)
Nildram (www.nildram.co.uk)
Zen (www.zenadsl.com)
I wouldn't really fault BT openworld, because, at my mates we was downloading an 189Mb zip file and the transfer rates never dropped below 70k/sec peaking at 90 and this was just on the Home 500 line. So I my eyes that very very impressive. but im sure all other isp get days like that? But with all the aboth isps ive known ppl to complain that they get really bad laag at times, etc, etc.
So really u should just take the plunge and go with yah instict.

I think the download rate will be pritty much the same throughtput, it just depends how lucky you are with contention ratio, IE if you have 49 other Pe0ns on the line or 49 other leechin wh0res. Reliability is a different matter. Depends on the ISP, depends on how much there cost cutting, etc.
For a tenner a month extra I'd be very tempted to go for a local ISP who know what there doing and you can talk to.

Well thats what I was thinking.
There was some rumor of BT blocking some file sharing software and incoming connections. I'd rather like to run dyndns at home so I can telnet in at lunch and read my mail. My problem is that if they block that, the service is useless to me. A 64k ISDN leased line would be more useful but they are bloody expensive.
I dont trust BT at all either.

At least with a modem, you can make your feeling felt and switch to a different ISP, with ADSL they'll show you your 12 month contract.

Hmm I'm in much the same position as I'm moving house and so have to give up my cable connection.
I think I'm going with nildram as they've just cut their prices again and seem to do a fair bit better than BT in the complaints dept. Plus I just dont trust BT not to make a mess out of things.

I have heard some pretty good ratings of Nildram. But they are supposibly pretty pricey which is a down fall:(

I see people are complaining about BT.
The fact of the matter is that somewhere along the lines you are gonna have contact with BT cos they fit the line.
It's their technology and it's routed through their cable networks.
BT maybe a pain in the a$$ but they do seem to get the job done... in the end :)
My BT Homechoice ADSL has had no problems since I've had it.
Like was said before all ISP's have their on and off days.
