The event as a whole starts at 9AM on the Friday.

There is an Early Arrival Service for people travelling long distances for arriving on the Thursday late afternoon.

Some tournaments may start from as early as midday on the Friday.

I attended i30 and paid for the EAS which was fine. however last time my clan mates didnt arrive till the Friday morning, so gaming wise I didnt really do a lot. However traveling from the north east of England I still want to travel down on the Thursday as before. Is it allowed to travel down on the Thursday, arrive at the racecourse, pitch up a tent but not actually book in meaning no EAS payment?

yes you can do that, eas is only entrance to the event on the thursday so you can pitch your tent

But be aware that all facilities (including toilets and the showers) are within the perimeter.

No reasonable EAS request has been refused in living memory, and I live in Kent (Medway Towns) and am therefore technically slightly closer than you.

A lot of ppl work on that Friday (and the Monday) but to get the most value from the event you're gunna have to book some days off. I have booked 2.5 days off so that I am able to drive down on Thursday afternoon and leave on Monday. without that it would be a very expensive lan £80 for 2 days
