It lets you use the steam community as well so you can still chat to your friends.

ah, i've heard people get performance hits in games when they join that beta for some reason so I think I'll pass for now

you can disable the in-game community thing that would cause the performance drop, settings > in-game tab > disable~

When wow is next launched through steam it adds a steam communtiy overlay. Just press shift + tab and it appears.
I like it and use it.

It may be more aimed towards people who actually use Steam however... :)
