As much as it seemed like SUCH a good idea. Its not. I dont recommend it.
Seeing the likes of Quake, KKeen, Wolfenstein and Doom on there, I thought, thats about £40, seems a pretty good deal.
I hold so many fond memories of them all.
How I wish I had left them that way.
Playing them now has just completely ruined my day. And most of my memories.
Keep the Nostalgia in the past where it belongs. Today I spent £40 of my hard earned ruining some great fond memories. Please, dont make the same mistake I did.
Games that I will keep installed and play through:
Quake 2 + all add ons
Quake 3 + Team Arena
RTCW
Doom3 + RoE
Games that are cluttering up the "Not Installed" list:
Commander Keen (all games)
Doom2
Final Doom
Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent riders
Hexen
Hexen2
Hexen: Deathkings of the dark citadel
Master levels of Doom
Quake + all add ons
Spear of destiny
Ultimate doom
Wolfenstein 3D
(Having said that though, its cheaper to buy the Super Pack with everything in it rather than just the software I will actually use)

Don't quite see what's wrong with those games? Haven't tried the steam versions myself, but the original copies that I run through a couple of sourceports every now and then work fine and I still play if I fancy a little bit of entertainment for 15-30 minutes.
What's wrong with the games in the uninstalled list, anyway?

Playing them now, they just were not as good as I remember them.
I have fond memories of playing them for hours (KKeen worst culprit here) and really enjoying them.
Just not amusing for me any more. And I gave most of the games a good 30 minutes play.

Of course they aren't. You are older and no longer have a childs mind, these things will never be the same. I agree with you that some games are better to leave, but some I still find fun to play through.
I have to admit, that the Lotus racing game I used to play on my 486 will never meet the great memories I have of it, nor would LHX :)

I've found that my mind has the ability to upscale memories.
Sometime around the start of the year I was pondering how great and deliciously playable some of the games I had for the Amiga were. So I got me some WinUAE action and erm, pretty much every Amiga game ever and prepared for an evening of nostalgia.
Oh dear. 320x240x8 really looked like that, didn't it? *shudder*
It wasn't just the presentation, though. I can easily forgive the way things looked - and looking back, it was pretty stunning what people could do with 64 colours - but it was all the games I remember spending weeks and months on were somehow now borderline unplayable. Gods, Utopia, Magic Pockets, Stunt Car Racer, A-Train and Cannon Fodder were among the mass of disappointments.
Having said that, I did spend the next three weeks playing Alien Breed 2 and Megalomania.

What is your point? You've only said it sucks and that's about it!
Why didn't you enjoy it?

I played through heretic again the other day (my own copy of it, but prompted by the steam release)
And it was just as awesome as I remember!
I played through Dark Forces not too long ago as well, that was great too. Not to mention the AWESOME Tyrian.

I never said it sucks. I said that its not as good as I remember it. And I remember it being awesome and me playing it for hours on end.
Hard to put my finger on why I didnt enjoy it. The res, the colours, the controls. It was just difficult to play and I didnt enjoy it.

Check out the guide on www.widescreengamingforums.com on how to improve the recent Steam releases, it may make a few of the games more bearable.

That, and once you've got the original XCom (UFO: Enemy Unknown) working, it's still THE BEST strategy game.
Ever.
It's still amazing fun after all these years, and I'm suprised nobody aside from the UFO:AI team (it brings back memories, but it just doesn't play as well as the original - too difficult and frustrating compared to the original,) have tried making an updated version of it.
To hells with WiC - give me back my alien death tanks of awesomeness and uncomfortably tight neon purple armour!

I love enemy unknown. I dl'd terror from the deep the other month off steam, and that was a waste of £3..
It is completely uncontrolable on a current system. You try and scroll the screen left or right when out trying to capture/kill the aliens and it justs leaps from side to side like crazy. It's a real shame.

I have Ultimate Doom, Final Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen and Hexen 2 currently installed, as well as as many wads as I could find :)
Never got round to buying Quake though...

And this is what DOSBox is for. :awesome:
The games from 1990-1997 sort of time frame only really work with a little help from sourceports, emulation platforms, or if your computer really is that old - and most of those are used for just slowing the program down. If they give out these old games on steam, they really should give you a version that's been edited and constructed so it can work properly on XP/Vista without so many problems.
Too much time/effort/money involved in such a thing probably, mind you.

Hence them being sue'd by Dosbox :) ... the only problem was the lack of documentation and modified source code being supplied with the games which has, in part, been rectified. DOSBox seem to welcome the use of their product for the purpose, just mildly and justifiable narked about the improper use of the licence, I understand that some elements of this were addressed immediately after release in a small patch. Some of their users also seem to be annoyed that the DOSBox settings can't be changed to what they consider 'optimal'.
