Valve are developing their "communities" system. Some nice things about it is that it integrates with your steam account and client (enable the beta participation in the settings).

It can be used to track friends, better messaging, and as a group (eg MPUK SC) see where regulars are playing and how often.

No registration needed, it uses your Steam account.
