View Full Version : EU PS3 - less functional than US/JAPAN

As reported over at bit-tech
"Not only are European PS3 buyers getting gouged in pricing terms - paying as much as 40% more for the console than our brethren overseas - but it turns out that European consoles are actually going to have less functionality, too.
How can this be? Well, in a bid to cut the cost of making the PS3, the hardware chips that enable PS2 backwards compatibility are being stripped out.
Stripped out.
The chips will be replaced with software emulation, with the result that backwards compatibility for European consoles will be, according to Sony, significantly less."

Also the market research guy quoted as saying this is somehow a good thing appears to work for a company that doesn't exist. Nice move again there Sony :D

I'd buy a PS3 only for Final Fantasy XIII assuming it's going to be half decent. Having said that I refuse to pay any more than £150 for a PS3 :p

In other news, a group of scientific researchers have released unprescedented claims that bears and other wildlife may defecate in woodland areas. Also, leading theologians have hinted that the Holy Pontiff may be aligned with Catholicism.
Anyone who expects a fair deal for Europe from Sony is frankly retarded and needs locking up with the rest of the dribbling idiots. Sorry, "mac owners".

If you read their press release:
http://www.scee.presscentre.com/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=4331&NewsAreaID=2
You'll see that yes, they are modifying the PS3 for Europe and adding software emulation.
And if you look at their backwards compatibility website:
http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/
You'll see they aren't saying what games will be supported until release day. I can only assume this is because it will be an embarassingly short list. If it was a medium/long list they'd already be bragging about it.

it's times like this when i wish i had a crystal ball to look into the future, so i could say "if you do X, Y will happen". it would be nice if when they add a feature to their console it works fully, and not half retarded just so they can add a feature. i wonder how this could come back and bite them for their next round of consoles?
having said that, you know it will always sell out regardless and sony will pat themselves on the back on a job well done.

The plan from day one was to remove ps2 and ps1 hardware and base it fully on software emulation so this doesnt come as a supprise to me at all..
Infact i dont know why people are that angry. In time im sure a full ps2/ps1 emulator will be built in.
I never buy a new console on the basis of having FULL bc becuase it never is true.. Even on ps2 there are quite a few ps1 games that still to this day fail to work so ps3 is no different.
In fact i think we are better off.. new hardware revisions allready is a good thing for us! Maybe they will run cooler and just more stable and any glitches will be ironed out.

Boo I say Sony... Booooo!!!
Strange that we always get juped in the UK. Can't say that it really bothers me that much, it's just the idea that someone in HQ came up with 'hey they can do without it they're Europeans'.
We're the biggest games market in the world you know ^^

Well, 360 runs Xbox 1 games on s/w emulation. The ones it supports work fine ;D
PS3 gaming will be pure dog **** anyway. Waste of time and money.

long delay, reduced features, and more expensive in Europe than anywhere else in the world... yeah, I dunno why people are that angry either.

i remember the good old days of consoles where because the developers couldn't rely on patching their games after release they actually had to do some effective QA
